Exploring the Scientific Method with Skittles

Science can be colourful, surprising, and even a little sweet!

This week, our class explored the Scientific Method with a fun Skittles experiment. We are learning that scientists ask questions, make predictions, test their ideas, observe carefully, and think about what they discover.

We started by arranging colourful Skittles around the edge of a plate. Before adding water, we made predictions about what might happen. Would the colours mix together? Would the Skittles change? Would anything happen at all?

Then came the exciting part — testing our predictions!

As we added water, we watched the colours begin to spread away from the candies, creating a beautiful rainbow pattern. As time passed, the colours continued to move and blend, giving us even more to observe and wonder about.

So what was happening?

The coloured sugar coating on the Skittles dissolves in water. As the sugar and food colouring dissolve, the colours spread through the water, creating the amazing patterns we observed.

This simple experiment gave us a wonderful opportunity to practise thinking like scientists:

Ask a question: What will happen when we add water to Skittles?

Make a hypothesis: Predict what we think will happen.

Experiment: Add water and watch carefully.

Observe: Notice how the colours move and change.

Draw conclusions: Compare our observations with our predictions.

One of the most important things we learned is that scientists don’t have to be right about their predictions! Every experiment is an opportunity to discover something new.

Take a look at our photos to see how our experiment changed over time. From a simple circle of candies to a swirling rainbow of colour, it was a wonderful reminder that science is all around us!

A closer look at the science!

Science can be colourful, surprising, and even a little sweet!
