Please visit this page for updates on what we are doing and for any news about our class or the school. I am always open to connect with families whether it's to ask a question or share a story. Please feel free to email me at any time or speak to me after school outside the classroom door. Another method would be through your child's planner or if you prefer a phone call, we can arrange a time to speak 🙂

I have attached the welcome letter below that was sent home with students last week for your reference.

Welcome Letter

Classroom Routines

In our class these are some of the routines that we have to ensure students have the opportunity to communicate, create and develop important skills.

Sharing Circle

Every morning in our class we all sit in a circle and allow the students to share how they are feeling and what is on their mind. This is an important routine because it helps to build community, empathy, speaking and active listening skills. When students are heard we can learn a great deal from them as well as learn more about how we can make today a great one. I would highly recommend taking some time out the day and just talking to your child. During these uncertain times we could all use a moment to be grounded and express whatever emotions we may be feeling.

Daily 5 Literacy Stations

It is important to develop reading and writing skills by using them everyday, please consider including two or three of these activities in your daily routines. Students will be familiar with most of these activities because they were incorporated into our class routines. Each stations lasts for about 15 minutes to give students an opportunity to practice different skills.

Read to self

Read to someone

Listen to reading (person or recording)

Reading Comprehension Dice Game

Please print to use

Work on writing (journaling, card making, story writing, etc.)

Five Spelling Rules Posters

Spelling Rules

First Grade Spelling Rules

Word work (please use the sight words to complete the activities)

Sight Words 1

Sight Words 2

Sight Words 3

Sight Words 4

Sight Words 5

Five Word Work Activities

Wordsearch

Roll and Write

Explorations

In our classroom we believe in the power of play. Play allows students to develop a variety of skills such as creative and critical thinking, the ability to communicate and collaborate, as well as learning and understanding personal and social awareness and responsibility. We try to incorporate about an hour each day of play in our classroom where students are off technology and exploring their environments hands on. A link to a documentary about the importance of play is provided to help demonstrate it's profound affects on people.

Power of Play

Warmest regards,

Rebecca Diep

Hello Families!
