{"id":2899,"date":"2021-03-29T09:01:27","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T16:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/derbitskyc\/?p=2899"},"modified":"2023-07-23T13:33:03","modified_gmt":"2023-07-23T20:33:03","slug":"growth-mindset-support-for-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/derbitskyc\/growth-mindset-support-for-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Growth Mindset Support for Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post is focused on <b>GROWTH MINDSET.\u00a0 <\/b><\/p>\n<p>A growth mindset occurs when we believe our intelligence and abilities can be improved with effort and the right strategies.\u00a0 In contrast, those with a<b>\u00a0fixed mindset<\/b> believe their intelligence and abilities cannot be altered in a meaningful way.\u00a0 Here is a graphic on fixed mindset vs. growth mindset.<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.brainpickings.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/taschen_informationgraphics10.jpg?w=680&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Mindset-Psychology-Carol-S-Dweck\/dp\/0345472322\/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&amp;keywords=growth+mindset&amp;qid=1616618223&amp;sr=8-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carol Dweck<\/a> is the pioneer of growth mindset and discovered that brain activity was off the charts whenever mistakes were being made.\u00a0 She scientifically proved that mistakes help our brains grow!\u00a0 Here is her Ted Talk on growth mindset called &#8220;The Power of Yet&#8221;.\u00a0 I highly recommend watching it:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The power of yet | Carol S Dweck | TEDxNorrk\u00f6ping\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J-swZaKN2Ic?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON LANGUAGE:\u00a0 <\/strong>I am noticing more and more students coming into my classrooms with fixed mindsets.\u00a0 They already think that they CAN&#8217;T do something by the time they enter Grade 2!\u00a0 Carol Dweck says that it is important to compliment a child&#8217;s <strong>effort<\/strong> as opposed to the outcome.\u00a0 We need to repeat to our children that <strong>mistakes help our brains grow <\/strong>and<strong> give them the opportunity to fail<\/strong>.\u00a0 In my classroom, I will often clap when a student is brave enough to make a mistake because their brains just grew and this is something to celebrate!<\/p>\n<p>The other phrase that is important to repeat with your child is that they are not able to do something <strong>YET<\/strong>.\u00a0 No one is good at things right away and they should not expect themselves to be either.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouseprimary.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Parents-Guide-to-a-Growth-Mindset-1-pdf-1024x724.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>FUN WAYS TO SUPPORT AT HOME <\/strong>(Click on the images for links):<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ideas.classdojo.com\/b\/growth-mindset\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.techjunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/How-to-Download-and-Save-Videos-From-the-ClassDojo-App.jpg?resize=738%2C320&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"How to Download and Save Videos from the ClassDojo App\" width=\"178\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a>Class Dojo<\/strong> has made a fab series on growth mindset.\u00a0 You can watch these videos with your child and discuss them with the talking points.\u00a0 Kids love these videos and you can continue to reference them for years to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biglifejournal.com\/blogs\/blog\/top-growth-mindset-books-children-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/61TQKEbcbeL._AC_SL1302_.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon.com : Big Life Journal, Second Edition: A Growth Mindset Journal for Children : Office Products\" width=\"61\" height=\"90\" \/><\/a>Books!<\/strong>\u00a0 There are so many books that support the concept of growth mindset.\u00a0 Big Life Journal has great resources for growth mindset and put together a great list of books.\u00a0 You can snatch them from your local library or google to see if you can find online versions.\u00a0 Please feel free to explore the website for their other free activities like this one &gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;
