{"id":2880,"date":"2021-02-19T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-20T00:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/derbitskyc\/?p=2880"},"modified":"2025-09-11T15:30:30","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T22:30:30","slug":"writing-support-for-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/derbitskyc\/writing-support-for-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Writing Support for Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This post is focused on <strong>WRITING.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writing is something that simply improves with practice.\u00a0 The more you write, the better a writer you become.\u00a0 However, we want to be careful to not hurt the joy in your child&#8217;s writing.\u00a0 Here are a few tips and activities you can try at home to promote writing in a joyful way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SPELLING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">It is important to not interrupt the flow of your child&#8217;s thoughts.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">If you<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> are correcting their spelling as they are writing, they may become discouraged and not want to put effort into their writing.\u00a0 We believe that it is a lot more exciting for a student to write about a &#8220;froshus dbrmn pensr&#8221; than a &#8220;bad do<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">g&#8221;.\u00a0 If we overcorrect their spelling, they will be less inclined to take risks.\u00a0 After they are finished writing, you can bring some attention to any of their Word Work words that have been misspelled.\u00a0 However, beyond that, we encourage students to GUM their spelling.\u00a0 Give it a try, Underline it, and Move on!<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>TELLING A STORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some students are working on their abilities to tell a story.\u00a0 They need to learn to expand their ideas before they can practice writing the words down.\u00a0 Here are a few activities you can do to help them expand their ideas:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Type Up the Story<\/strong> &#8211; Ask your child to tell you a story and type it up as they are telling it.\u00a0 This is a cozy activity to do together that helps remove the pressure of your child having to write the words down and helps them focus on the plot. Ask them questions such as, Can you tell me more about this new character?\u00a0 Can you tell me more about the setting?\u00a0 Why did your character choose to behave this way?\u00a0 How do they feel? What does it look like?\u00a0 Smell like? Taste like?\u00a0 Sound like?\u00a0 Look like?\u00a0 Feel like?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pass the Story<\/strong> &#8211; This is a fun game that can be done anywhere.\u00a0 Try it in the car or at the dinner table.\u00a0 One person starts the story with the first sentence.\u00a0 Then they pass the story to the next person who says the next sentence.\u00a0 You keep going around and around until the story is finished!<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>WRITING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember to keep it fun!\u00a0 If your child feels like it is a chore, then this will stunt their growth.
