For some of you, fractions are brand new, and for others, it&#8217;s a bit of a review. Either way \u2014 we are all learning together! &#x1f389;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"860\">In this unit, we will:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"1110\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"908\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"908\">Understand what fractions are (like \u00bd, \u00bc, \u2153).<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-vector\/fraction-pizzas-kids-pizza-slices-260nw-2280115385.jpg\" alt=\"2+ Thousand Kids Fractions Royalty-Free Images, Stock Photos &amp; Pictures | Shutterstock\" width=\"144\" height=\"78\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"909\" data-end=\"985\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"985\">Learn about <strong data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"947\">equivalent fractions<\/strong> (did you know \u00bd is the same as 2\/4?).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"986\" data-end=\"1043\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1043\">Compare and order fractions (Which is bigger: \u2153 or \u00bc?).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1044\" data-end=\"1110\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1110\">Use fractions in real-life problems, like measuring and sharing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1339\">Our goals for this unit will be to learn about <strong data-start=\"1180\" data-end=\"1208\">part-whole relationships<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1250\">improper fractions and mixed numbers<\/strong>, and using <strong data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1296\">fractions in number operations<\/strong> (like adding and subtracting fractions).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1339\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com\/thumbitem\/Canadian-Money-Worksheets-and-Clip-Art-BUNDLE-7141959-1657342983\/original-7141959-4.jpg\" alt=\"Canadian Money Worksheets and Clip Art BUNDLE\" width=\"158\" height=\"158\" \/>We also continued with our work around money!\u00a0 This week we visited 4 different activity stations:\u00a0 <em>&#8220;Piggy Banking&#8221;, &#8220;Keeping it Simple&#8221;, &#8220;Making Change&#8221;, and &#8221; What&#8217;s Another Way?&#8221;.<\/em> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRO84KdMITjmAD8S89GQC3BbgbyOHBnp2XYRA&amp;s\" alt=\"Piggy Bank PNG Clip Art Image\u200b | Gallery Yopriceville - High-Quality Free  Images and Transparent PNG Clipart\" width=\"84\" height=\"87\" \/> The skills we were practicing included recording and adding money amounts, representing money amounts using the least amount of bills\/coins, calculating change, and showing 3 different ways to create the same amount of money.\u00a0 Not everyone completed each activity at each station and some of you chose to take it home to work on.\u00a0 Bring it back on Thursday because they will be need to be handed in completed by Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1707\">On Tuesday and Wednesday, we continued reading our amazing novel <strong data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1517\">&#8220;Out of My Mind&#8221; by Sharon Draper<\/strong>. Melody is now in <strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1547\">Grade 5<\/strong> and her school is trying something new \u2014 an <strong data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1611\">inclusion model<\/strong>. This means that all students, no matter how they learn, are included in the same classrooms.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1707\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/t4.ftcdn.net\/jpg\/01\/87\/88\/73\/360_F_187887346_YLDJTP1etexOM8qpBATfKR79al4Kf7x3.jpg\" alt=\"Diverse Children Clipart Images \u2013 Browse 15,758 Stock Photos, Vectors, and Video | Adobe Stock\" width=\"367\" height=\"88\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1709\" data-end=\"1745\">We\u2019ve had great conversations about:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1875\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1774\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1748\" data-end=\"1774\">What <strong data-start=\"1753\" data-end=\"1766\">inclusion<\/strong> means<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1775\" data-end=\"1824\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1777\" data-end=\"1824\">How we treat others with kindness and respect<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1825\" data-end=\"1875\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1875\">And&#8230; what does &#8220;normal&#8221; really mean anyway? &#x1f914;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1955\">You all show such <strong data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"1906\">empathy<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1911\" data-end=\"1928\">understanding<\/strong>, and I am so proud of you!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1955\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vectorstock.com\/i\/500p\/61\/57\/we-are-so-proud-of-you-vector-42276157.jpg\" alt=\"Proud of You Vector Images (over 290)\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" \/>Speaking of being proud&#8230; all of you worked so hard to reach the goal to have all our African country paragraphs typed out, printed, and supported by images!! Whew! What a LOT of work you have already done.\u00a0 Each group is now on either planning the tri-fold board OR working on the actual presentation board. <img class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/200x150\/3b\/3d\/a3\/3b3da36f0fbc4cc8d30a28f314d975b9.jpg\" alt=\"16 tri fold poster board ideas | tri fold poster, tri fold poster board,  poster board\" \/> That is great!\u00a0 There are lots of steps still to do before we are ready for our showcase, but we are certainly on track!!\u00a0 <strong><em>An email was sent to all families inviting you to &#8220;Save the Date&#8221;. <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/media.istockphoto.com\/id\/1323316898\/vector\/daily-calendar-icon-12-june.jpg?s=612x612&amp;w=0&amp;k=20&amp;c=PR3T2YwEd4IFepXR00qi5VTCS-KhB6E83Uny6S7nTDI=\" alt=\"3,100+ June 12 Stock Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector ...\" width=\"84\" height=\"84\" \/> Our &#8220;Trip around the World&#8221; is happening on June 12th and families are invited to the tour from 2:30- 3:00 that afternoon.\u00a0 Mark your calendars!\u00a0 We&#8217;d love to see you!\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2223\">As we begin to wrap up our <strong data-start=\"2113\" data-end=\"2135\">Rocks and Minerals<\/strong> unit, we explored about how we can <strong data-start=\"2176\" data-end=\"2222\">use Earth\u2019s resources in a sustainable way<\/strong>. Sustainability means taking care of the Earth so that people, animals, and plants can live healthy lives now and in the future. It means using only what we need and making sure we don\u2019t hurt nature. For example, if we cut down trees to make paper, we should also plant new trees. If we use water or electricity, we should try not to waste it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"554\" data-end=\"765\">Sustainability is about making smart choices that keep the environment clean and safe. When we take care of the planet, we help make sure it will still be a good place to live for our children and grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2225\" data-end=\"2266\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fydn.imgix.net\/m%2Fgen%2Fart-print-square-p1%2Ffb56b67a-a2be-4859-8348-12cf7bdd60e7.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&amp;q=75\" alt=\"Reduce Reuse Rock Out Art Print\" width=\"281\" height=\"281\" \/>To finish our unit, you\u2019ll be working on a sustainability comic project and a Mini-Test to review what we have learned. We will have the test a little later in May because we think that working on the Comic project will help you remember all the cool things we\u2019ve covered like:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2433\" data-end=\"2589\">\n<li data-start=\"2433\" data-end=\"2458\"><\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2433\" data-end=\"2458\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2435\" data-end=\"2458\">The <strong data-start=\"2439\" data-end=\"2453\">rock cycle<\/strong> &#x1f504;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2459\" data-end=\"2487\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2461\" data-end=\"2487\">Types of <strong data-start=\"2470\" data-end=\"2482\">minerals<\/strong> &#x1f48e;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2488\" data-end=\"2536\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2490\" data-end=\"2536\"><strong data-start=\"2490\" data-end=\"2511\">Natural resources<\/strong> and how we use them &#x1f30d;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2589\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2589\">Ways we can protect the Earth and its materials &#x1f49a;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2829\">On Wednesday, we had some fun in the <strong data-start=\"2742\" data-end=\"2758\">computer lab,<\/strong> and we\u2019ll do the same<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/thumbs.dreamstime.com\/b\/people-doing-different-jobs-illustration-96597148.jpg\" alt=\"Different Jobs Stock Illustrations \u2013 1,912 Different Jobs ...\" width=\"210\" height=\"140\" \/> next week! You will be using the lab to research for your projects, both your <em><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sustainability Comic and your Career Project<\/span><\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0In this project, you will choose a career that interests you and create a fun and informative brochure to teach others about it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"298\" data-end=\"506\">This term, we have been exploring your own <strong data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"350\">skills<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"352\" data-end=\"362\">values<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"368\" data-end=\"381\">interests<\/strong>\u2014what you\u2019re good at, what\u2019s important to you, and what you enjoy doing. Now, we have asked you to pick a job that matches those things and research the <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/static.vecteezy.com\/system\/resources\/thumbnails\/046\/419\/617\/small_2x\/children-hobby-cartoon-school-or-preschool-kids-cook-read-draw-and-play-music-creative-childrens-hobbies-illustration-set-active-kids-hobbies-vector.jpg\" alt=\"Kids Hobbies Vector Art, Icons, and Graphics for Free Download\" width=\"238\" height=\"134\" \/>career to find out what the job is like, what tools or training are needed, and why it\u2019s important. You\u2019ll use this information to design a creative brochure that explains the career in an exciting way. You will share your brochure with the class so we can all learn about different jobs and start thinking about our futures! Remember, you\u2019ll be making a <strong data-start=\"2974\" data-end=\"2986\">brochure<\/strong> that tells people all about a cool job you&#8217;re interested in. Maybe you&#8217;ll be a vet, a pilot, a scientist, or a game designer!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3387\">We began our short unit on <strong data-start=\"3246\" data-end=\"3273\">Body Changes and Health<\/strong>. We\u2019re learning about how our bodies grow and change as we get older. It\u2019s totally normal and part of <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com\/thumbitem\/Clip-Art-by-Mannsy-Puberty-5472095-1632960318\/original-5472095-1.jpg\" alt=\"Puberty - Clip Art - Volume 1 - Commercial Use\" width=\"180\" height=\"180\" \/>growing up! Some topics we\u2019ll talk about are, h<strong data-start=\"3421\" data-end=\"3439\">ealthy habits<\/strong> (like sleep, exercise, and eating well), changes during <strong data-start=\"3499\" data-end=\"3510\">puberty<\/strong> (yes, that word!), taking care of our <strong data-start=\"3552\" data-end=\"3572\">personal hygiene, and u<\/strong>nderstanding our <strong data-start=\"3595\" data-end=\"3607\">emotions<\/strong> and feelings.\u00a0It is important to talk about this topic so that we can make informed healthy choices and show <strong data-start=\"3807\" data-end=\"3843\">respect for ourselves and others. <\/strong><span style=\"color: #444444;\">We\u2019ll keep this unit fun, respectful, and open for questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3219\" data-end=\"3387\">We are proud of all the work you\u2019re doing and the thoughtful way you treat each other.
