Ms. Willis has provided us with a little overview of what you have been working on in your art classes with her. She wanted your parents to know just what you have been up to in there because the first term is almost over. I know, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Time is moving at light speed it seem. Here is what Ms. Willis wants your parents to know:

As artists we are learning to use the art studio and its materials in responsible and respectful ways. This term we have learned about the artists Sonia Delaunay and Tim Burton, and we created two pieces of art inspired by their styles. We are developing our artist mindset where risk taking, play, and experimentation are valued; and mistakes can lead us to something beautiful.

In our regular class time we worked hard this week. We have begun finishing up our paragraphs, three drafts altogether, and most of us are ready to publish. It will be exciting to get the paragraphs finished and be able to read one another’s work. Your paragraphs really came a long way. You were AMAZING peer editors and I saw many great additions and changes to your drafts as a result of working with a peer. Hopefully, this week we will finish our final versions with some illustrations and be able to share them with one another.

In Math we worked on estimating strategies as a large group and with partners. The week ended with you showing me what you could do ‘on your own’. We were learning that:

•

Estimating can be useful to check a calculation, before or after you calculate.

•

Estimating can also be useful for solving a problem that doesn’t need an exact answer.

•

There is always more than one way to estimate a sum or difference, and there is always more than one possible estimate.

For example:

–

Here’s one way to estimate 3214 + 5743:

32 hundreds + 57 hundreds

=

89 hundreds

=

8900

Here’s another way to estimate 3214 + 5743:

3214 + 5743 is about 3000 + 6000 = 9000.

–

Here’s a way to estimate 4212 – 2049:

4212 – 2049 is about 4212 – 2000 = 2212.

Here’s another way to estimate 4212 – 2049:

4212 – 2049 is about 4000 – 2000 = 2000.

Next week, we will start working with adding and subtracting multi digit calculations. In another area of Math, we have been working on measurement using mm and cm. You have been measuring, drawing and estimating measurements. Using your rulers takes some practice but it looks like all of you really have the hang of it!

As we study each of the seasons and how they are different from one another, you are also using some strategies to help you unpack and take note of the important information from articles you read and videos you watch. It is an important skill to be able to pick out what is important and why. Using a highlighter can help us slow down and focus on the key ideas rather than getting bogged down with too many details. If we read science articles straight through without stopping or re-reading, we often forget what we read. We have one more season to investigate, Spring.

Mrs. Davis has been away with her family for the last two weeks but she is excited to be coming back and she looks forward to seeing you all again next week.
