IXL<\/h1>\n<p>There are some of you who are working on IXL for math. Unfortunately, the free trial for schools ended yesterday. I have gotten in touch with the district to see if we can get a class membership. I am currently waiting on a response and will keep you posted when I hear back.<\/p>\n<h1>2. Morning Journal *<\/h2>\n<h3>Plant of the week: <strong>Columbia Lily<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/U31G3fF.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Columbia Lily (sometimes known as Tiger Lily) is a native species to our region. They don&#8217;t like the shade very much so they often grow in pockets of the forest, meadow, or even roadside where there is sun exposure. Similar to the Trillium flower, the Columbia Lily seedling takes a long time be is able to grow flowers (several\u00a0 years), so don&#8217;t pick them, either! Once they flower, the lilies blossom every year in early summer.<\/p>\n<p>Some sources say that the indigenous people of the region used the bulb of the plant as a starchy component to meals.<\/p>\n<p>I recently found this particular lily while I was taking a stroll at Lighthouse Park. There was a large variety of flowers there!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Morning Journal Question:\n<ul>\n<li>What do you notice about the Columbia Lily?<\/li>\n<li>What do you think the function of each structure is?<\/li>\n<li>Why do you think the shape is the way it is?<\/li>\n<li>What questions do you have about the Columbia Lily?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>b.) Please recreate your animal\u2019s habitat. This may be done on paper or in a real-life structure form.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the 3 essential components of a habitat:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Food<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Water<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shelter<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How does the animal\u2019s habitat provide these 3 components? Please describe and represent this (either in a drawing or structure form). You may also display this on a PowerPoint (or any other way you wish to explore).<\/p>\n<h2>e.) Genius Hour (optional)<\/h2>\n<p>Continue your Genius Hour project. You may want to focus on your \u201cweird animal\u201d this week.\u00a0 This is an ongoing project. If you have completed it or are just starting, here is the planning sheet to start a new inquiry:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/daneshwands\/files\/2020\/04\/GeniusHourPlanningSheet-3.pdf\">Genius Hour Planning Sheet<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Follow these steps:<br \/>\n<strong>Brainstorm<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 what topics interest you? Write down topics that interest you (e.g. birds, palm trees, global warming, Jupiter, etc\u2026). Select one to focus on this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Question<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 What\u00a0<strong>deep<\/strong>\u00a0questions do you wish to explore on your topic? (e.g. how do birds fly?)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 How are you going to find answers to your questions? With limited variety of resources, it will likely be online or an interview with an \u201cexpert\u201d on the topic (perhaps family\/friends).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Present<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 How are you going to share your knowledge? Please come up with a a way to briefly present your project.
