Have a wonderful and safe summer break!

Goodbye for now!

Thank you for your kind words and for all the hard work that you’ve put in throughout the year. As I said to many parents, you have all developed tech skills along with life skills. You have developed understanding of complicated applications such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and many more. With these platforms, you have all been so good at organizing all the different usernames and passwords. Many of you have also established your own routine that fits your learning and life needs!

I am so proud of you all, and please, feel free to contact me through email if you have some wonderful summer memories to share!

To parents, thank you for being in touch with me. I appreciate all that you have done before spring break and even more of the work that you’ve done after spring break. I wish you nothing but the best, and feel free to email me if you have any questions.

In the meantime, enjoy the summer break, and I hope to be in contact with you soon to let you know where I’ll be!

Wednesday June 24

Thank you for all that you have done this term. I am fortunate to have worked with each and every one of you. Please find yesterday’s slideshow here. Check your @edu.burnabyschools.ca email for the password.

Today you will be picking up your belongings. Please read the following to expect what it will be like.

Please read the information below carefully so that we can all have a smooth transition to summer break.

  1. To pick up progress reports, please knock at our outside door from 9:00-12:00 or 1:00-3:00. (I eat lunch at 12!)
  2. You will be given a white bag full of your belongings (things from your cubby, your black storage bin by the windows, and your binders) – be prepared to bring this home!
  3. There will be a lost and found table full of things that were randomly round without names. These include projects, clothes, and some school supplies. Have a look before you go home!
  4. Return any books that you have borrowed. (Math textbook, my books, library books, novel study) If these books were in your cubby/storage bin, then you do not have to worry about this. Please see the remaining novel study books below. If your name is on the list, please check for the book at home.
  5. If you have a district laptop, you may keep it until September.
  6. If you borrowed a silver laptop of mine, you must return it to me.

Have a wonderful summer holiday. Have fun, while keeping safety in mind. Thank you everyone for a wonderful year.

Monday June 22

Hello! Today marks the second last day of instruction (in school and at home). We will be winding down in all activities. Please find your activities for today below:

Please upload your science biomes PowerPoint projects onto a new channel on Teams. This channel is called Science PowerPoints. In this area, you’ll find a YouTube link tutorial on how to do this. Once uploaded, feel free to leave some positive comments, ideas, or thoughts on your classmates’ work! Everyone’s worked very hard on this and I was happy to see how our ability to do PowerPoints have skyrocketed in such short time!

For math, you can do IXL, Khan, or Prodigy math. Those at school with me play Prodigy with me from 11:30 – 11:55. We may be online during that time, so you might just see me! My name in Prodigy is Priscilla Gardenboy.

Click here for some extension activities that can try out online.

For tomorrow’s class meeting at 1:15, each student at the meeting will have the opportunity to share something with the class. If you’d like to share anything to the class, jot some notes down so you are prepared to share confidently tomorrow! I really hope to see everybody there. I’ve prepared a special slideshow that highlights the best, bizarre moments (there were many!) of the year.

Friday June 19

Happy Friday!

Great seeing many of you yesterday during our class meeting. Today will be a catch-up day.

I’ve put an activity up on Teams about developing the work that goes behind planning a field trip. I put it on last week so check it out if you have nothing to do. It’s optional but I encourage you to try it out. There’s a lot of work that goes into planning a field trip and I want to see if you can do it! There’s some researching, some persuading, and some math involved in the activity. If you do well, I’ll let your teacher next year know that you’ve “somewhat planned” a field trip this year!

Click here to see a list of optional activities that you may want to try out.

Continue working on your French on Duolingo or type on ATRT! I’m so sad that I don’t get to see your progress in typing this year =(.

Go outside! It will be raining tomorrow based on the weather report. Run, make bubbles, read a book outside!

Find a recipe online and ask to cook or bake with your family! Maybe you can plan an activity for your family! Check what ingredients you need, and see if you can go shopping for groceries over the weekend!

Thursday June 18

Hello everybody. I’m am looking forward to our 2nd last class meeting of the year at 2:00pm today.

Here are the learning opportunities for today:

We have a class meeting at 2:00pm.

For math, you will begin working on a new unit about probability on Math IXL.

  • Grade 4: W1: Understanding Probability
  • Grade 5: T4: Understanding Probability
  • No video tutorial for both grades.

Continue developing your French on Duolingo.

Continue working on your science project (PowerPoint) if you have not yet finished.

You have probably noticed less work in the recent days. This is done on purpose so that those who are a little behind can catch up. If you have caught up with everything, click here to see some optional activities.

Wednesday June 17

Hello everybody.

Please see your learning opportunities for the day below.

For math, you will not be doing Math IXL. You have an assignment on Teams where you will be showing me your understanding of reflections, rotations, and translations. Please make sure you watch the tutorial video on Teams.

For science, many of you have finished your PowerPoint. If you haven’t, continue working on it. My suggestion is to have the slide about cool facts completed. Let me know if you have questions.

Continue typing on ATRT or a typing program of your choice. Try Prodigy if you haven’t already (class code A872A3).

If you have finished everything early, check out the resources page on the class blog. Click the bold link to find a list fun activities! Try them out and let me know if you have any cool online resources/activities to share! Here’s the document if you can’t find it on the class blog.

Tuesday June 16

Hello everybody,

I am at Suncrest today so I won’t be able to respond to questions as quick as usual.

Here are your learning opportunities for the day:

For ELA, you’ll be reading a poem about summer. Please find the assignment on Teams, and make sure that you read the poem more than two times. To uncover the meaning, look for the hint that I included in the word document.

For math, continue working on Math IXL. Both grades again, will be working on the same lesson. It’s combining the concepts that you learned yesterday. A combination of reflecting, rotating, and translating shapes. There is no video tutorial. Make sure to slow down and ask yourself… “what’s the first step” and “what’s the second step”.

Monday June 15

Hello everybody,

Here’s the schedule for the week. This begins the 2nd last week that we will be spending with each other this school year =( Please see your learning opportunities for today below:

I will be at school teaching today and therefore, I will be responding to questions a bit slower than usual.

Revisit your core competency PowerPoint and make it look great! Please proofread, add backgrounds, and add transitions if you know how to. (Sam – and probably many of you know how to add great transitions so you can ask him if you need help). Make it look great!

For science, continue working on your PowerPoint. My suggestion for pacing is to work on the animals and their adaptations slide. If you are finished, great! Work on something else. Click here to find some extension activities. If you know any great activities online, let me know through email and I might add it to the list!

For math, both grades will have the same lesson on Math IXL. You will be working at the grade 5 level, doing lesson X3 – Reflections, rotations and translations.

  • Reflection means reflecting from a line: visit here to play with some reflections.
  • Rotation means turning the shape from a point
  • Translation means sliding or moving the shape
  • Watch this cheesy YouTube video tutorial: https://youtu.be/0Z1aUhGCZs0
  • This lesson can be a little bit tricky. It’s normal to not get all of it. I’m just challenging you a bit.

Find your lesson on Math IXL.

Continue working on French on Duolingo!
