Start collecting all those lids!\u00a0 Instead of throwing them in the recycling\u00a0 bin, they can be reused for something fun.\u00a0 Not all learning materials need to be purchased from a store.\u00a0 Use what you have around your home.\u00a0 Here, I have added a sieve, chopsticks and a spoon.\u00a0 Tongs would be a great idea too!<\/p>\n

All you need is a bucket, some water and any utensils you may have.\u00a0 Let your child explore scooping, picking and catching the lids.\u00a0 “Can you find all the RED lids?\u00a0 How many lids can you scoop in the sieve?\u00a0 Why are some lids floating and some sinking?\u00a0 Allow your child to investigate this open-ended activity.\u00a0 There are no instructions or rules.\u00a0 Step back and observe.\u00a0 How are they are using the utensils, do they have a preference or are they simply enjoying splashing the lids back into the water?<\/p>\n

Using lids for Playful Numeracy activities:<\/p>\n

Stacking<\/strong> – how high can you stack them?\u00a0 How many are in each stack?\u00a0 Can we measure how tall it is using a ruler?<\/p>\n

Order\/Counting<\/strong> – can you arrange them from small to large and vice versa.\u00a0 Can you make a pattern?<\/p>\n

Sorting<\/strong> – can you sort them by colour, size,\u00a0 or by the material, metal or plastic?<\/p>\n

Make it into a game: have them place the amount of lids needed to correspond with the “Number” sheets.\u00a0 Make counting fun!\u00a0 Children are hands-on learners.\u00a0 Give your child the opportunity to handle the materials\/objects.\u00a0 Step back and observe how they use the materials.\u00a0 I am sure they will surprise you and will find new and innovative ways to play with LIDS<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
