Students use the Proficiency Scale in class to self-assess and evaluate their work and their effort. Teachers use the scale to help students set goals and take responsibility for their work. In the report card, the proficiency scale is use to indicate a student’s level of performance in relation to prescribed learning standards. Here is a description of what each level looks and sounds like.
EMERGING: ” I’m just getting started. I learn best with help.”
Core Competency– I can help myself by asking questions/practicing.
DEVELOPING: “I get some of it. I am beginning to do more independently.”
Core Competency– I can help myself by asking questions/practicing. I can meet some of the expectations on my own.
PROFICIENT: “I get it! I can do it on my own.”
Core Competency- I fully met the expectations.
EXTENDING: “I get it and go beyond what is expected of me. I can teach it to a friend.”
Core Competency- I fully understand. I apply my understanding in new situations.
