Hi families!
Division 9 began a fascination with alligators and crocodiles since we started comparing numbers a few months ago. Each morning, we compare which number is more or less using our answers on our “Question of the Day”. Sometimes, both numbers are equal, and when that happens, that’s a really exciting day for us!
We learned that these symbols, >, <, and =, can be used to compare numbers, and that this symbol, >, looked like an alligator mouth! We discussed that since alligators love to eat, that the side which has more numbers is the way that the alligator mouth should be facing because it wants to eat “more food”.
Our excitement with alligators and crocodiles grew and grew! Ms. Tracey brought in some of her own alligator and crocodiles to hang out with us in class!
Finally, to continue practicing our greater than or less than skills, we have been playing math games that show that we can compare numbers.
One thing that we questioned as a class was, “What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator”? Our conversation sparked when some students questioned if the alligator puppet we had was in fact, an alligator. Well… we learned that alligators have U-shaped mouths, and crocodiles have V-shaped mouths (oops!). But doesn’t alli-greater than sound better than crocodile-greater than?
Talin is walking me through the pictures in this blog! So cool ❤️
Thanks, Sonia! I’m happy you and Talin are checking them out!
