Last week we went on a field trip to Laity Pumpkin Patch-south side. The students had a blast there going through the different stations and they also enjoyed picking their own pumpkin.
This afternoon, the students got to explore and learn more about pumpkins through four stations:
Roll a Pumpkin- Math dice activity
Observe and draw a pumpkin
Measure how tall (with unifix cubes) and how round (with string) the pumpkin is
Explore the inside and outside of a pumpkin using our senses
Exploring the Pumpkin- taking a closer look…
The students were asked to use their sense of sight, smell, sound, and touch to explore the inside and outside of a pumpkin. Here are some words/phrases some students mentioned during this activity:
How did the pumpkin feel? “sticky” “bumpy” “slimy” “squishy” “wet”
How did the pumpkin smell? “Ewwww… gross” “yucky” “smells good” “smells like a pumpkin”
How did the pumpkin look like? “bumps” “fibrous strands” “seeds” “orange” “Mrs. Wong cut it open”
What sounds did the pumpkin make? “nothing” “knocking sounds when I knocked it”
