2024 Solar Eclipse

As per district safety precautions, we will be indoors when the the solar eclipse takes place tomorrow; we will try to watch it live online.

From the Canadian Space Agency:

On , a spectacular and rare celestial event is set to unfold over Canada, the United States and Mexico – a total solar eclipse. As the Moon aligns perfectly between Earth and the Sun, temporary darkness will sweep across parts of the country, captivating countless spectators.

Science fun!

Div. 15 has been learning about matter:

“Something that takes up space.” ~Hailey

“It has weight.” ~Ved

Students have been identifying different types of matter that could fit into the category of a solid, liquid, or a gas.

Some objects brought out our curiosity in discussion- Is toothpaste a solid or a liquid? What about gum?

The ultimate question was… what if there was a type of matter that fits into more than one category? Does this exist?

We found out that there is and that we could make it ourselves!

Click on the photo below to learn more about OOBLECK and how this substance is both a solid and a liquid! What is this substance called?

SFU Science field trip

The rain stayed away and we had a fun adventure up to SFU!

The bus ride was a blast and we managed to get both classes together onto one bus each way. We were amazed to be on campus and to see all the buildings and student spaces.

And while some of the scientific terminology used in the session was quite advanced, students were engaged and asking fantastic questions.

For one of the experiments we timed a little car with a few trials; we learned that the harder the force, the faster it went.

Ask your child about one of the questions they were asked to hypothesize: Which would fall faster- a bowling ball or a feather- if all the air was taken out of the room? We watched a video clip that surprised us!

A big thank you to Anaya’s mom for joining us today… helping to supervise and keep everyone safe.

We can’t wait for our next field trip!

Halloween Fun!

We had a fantastic Halloween Day!

We joined Division 12 for Halloween Bingo and a variety of games in the morning- we had a blast!

Our afternoon was spent in the beautiful sunshine parading and dancing outside while showing off our costumes and dance moves with the rest of the primary classes.

Thank you to those who brought in treats for the class… we were so appreciative of your thoughtfulness. Have a fun and safe Halloween night!
