Program starts Oct 20th at 10-1130 AM in the New Westminster Welcome Centre (Burnaby families are welcome to join!), child minding available \u2013 if you are interested in the Building Community &amp; Connections program please register by calling Elizabeth @ 778-727-0786 or email <a href=\"mailto:Elizabeth.cottam@purposesociety.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Elizabeth.cottam@purposesociety.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>All kids need a strong identity as well as a sense of group belonging, but racism hurts the healthy development of both. Encourage your child to \u201cBreathe, Feel, Share\u201d when something stressful related to race happens. Take some deep belly breaths, feel the emotions and think of words to describe them, and share the experience with a trusted adult (source: Sesame Street). They will copy and follow adults\u2019 actions, including how to interact with others. Caregivers and parents are very influential as they help kids understand this complicated, flawed and often unfair world. Your words and actions matter. Here are some ideas on how to talk about race, racism and anti-racism with preschoolers. Learn more @\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.feelingsfirst.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">www.feelingsfirst.ca<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Visit your public library, borrow and read books about different people and cultures like this book by Todd Parr: &#8220;It&#8217;s Okay to Be Different&#8221;, published by Little Brown Book for Young Readers. (This is my little add-on).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1268 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/twelfth-strongstart\/files\/2021\/10\/todd-parr-295x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/twelfth-strongstart\/files\/2021\/10\/todd-parr-295x300.jpg 295w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/twelfth-strongstart\/files\/2021\/10\/todd-parr.jpg 492w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What you can do to discuss racial equality with young children:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to talk about differences.<em> \u201cDid you know that people are born with different skin colours?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Share how biases make you feel and why. <em>\u201cIt makes me sad that rules allow certain groups of people to be treated differently.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Frame things as fair and unfair. <em>\u201cThis book included white inventors. That\u2019s unfair because _______ invented things too.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Distinguish between different and weird. <em>\u201cJust because something is different, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s weird.
