Quiet Time

Quiet Time Changes Lives

The Quiet Time program is a practical, evidence-based approach to reduce stress and dramatically improve academic performance, student wellness, and the classroom environment.

In our classroom, Quiet Time is scheduled 3 days a week, for 15 minutes. Many students choose an educationally valuable activity such as reading, drawing, or completing work, while others choose to meditate.   They are expected to be in their own personal bubble. The Quiet Time period allows students to quiet their mind, rest their bodies, and restore their readiness to learn.

I found that dead silence in the classroom was too stark!  Hence I listened to about 50 spa-type music, and found most to be irritating, but discovered one in particular to be quite relaxing… . Click to listen to our Indian background flute music…

Response from my students.   I have received very positive responses from my students who were my pilot project last school year 2016/2017.  They especially liked:

  • the freedom to choose what to do
  • not having to attend, and
  • the peaceful music in the background.

My 2017/2018  students have active blogs, and have blogged about their experiences with Quiet Time. You may read them by clicking on the top menu item “BLOGS”.

  • I usually I just day dream. I don’t like that we can’t talk to someone. I feel bored during quiet time. I notice that people whisper now and then. Quiet time means to me time to get lazy. It surprised me that it saved a whole school. I would recommend it to students who have too much emotional problems. No I don’t have any questions.

  • When we do Quiet Time, I usually draw. I like to draw my favourite flags of the world. I also like to read when I don’t want to draw. I like quiet time because I have the freedom to do anything by myself. However, I don’t like how you can’t play or do something quiet with my friends. I feel calm during quiet time because I’m in my personal bubble. I noticed when I do quite time I don’t talk to my friends. It means I have time for my hobby; drawing flags. I was surprised that I like quite time. I thought I would’ve hated it because I couldn’t talk to my friends. I would recommend it to classes that are aggressive and energetic. I do not have any questions.

  • In Quiet time I usually sit in my chair and watch other people do stuff or I draw or finish work.
I like the silence in Quiet time because I get to relax for 15 minutes.
I feel relaxed in Quiet time because its very quiet.
I notice that lots of people finish work or draw.
Quiet time doesn’t really mean anything to me it’s just something we do in class 3 times a week.
It surprises me how quiet our class can be in 15 minuets.
Id recommend it to other schools because it can be nice to take your mind off of schoolwork.
I do not have any questions for quiet time.

  • Quiet time is a good strategy to use when you feel bored , or stressed.
When I feel bored, I tend to draw or read.
Also with the flute music on, its relaxing and calming. 🙂

  • The things that you should do are doing work if you have it, if you don’t then you can do whatever you want by your self.

The thing I don’t like about Quiet time is that we sometimes go past the lunch bell so we don’t have time to eat our lunch..

I feel like I am tired.

I notice nothing during Quiet time because I just sleep.

    It means nothing to me.

Nothing surprised me because why would it?

I would recommend it to my sister.

    I don’t have any questions
