Shape of the week

FINAL  Week at a Glance:  Optional activities for June 22 and 23

REMINDERS:

The final day for in-class students will be Tuesday, June 23.  In-class students will be taking home their supplies and report cards that afternoon.

On Wednesday, June 24 from 8:40- 3:00, families from Division 8 that have been working at home, will have an opportunity to pick up bagged supplies and report cards from outside of the classroom at a time scheduled via email. If you have not scheduled a time already, please email us to set a time ASAP.  The bags will be labelled and placed along the outside wall of the classroom.  Please remember social distancing if a few of you arrive at the same time.  Ms Sharma and Ms Silva will both be at the school to wish you a Wonderful Summer!

This weeks work is optional and meant to be easy going and fun activities.  We have included two books (one to listen to and one to read on Epic), a Nature Walk and a Memory Book.

Since Sunday was National Indigenous Day our readings this week will be two Indigenous stories. We will tie them into a Nature Walk or Adventure Walk in your area.

  • Listen to Just a Walk” by Jordan Wheeler

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPjF7XIpCwc

This reading is done is by an Indigenous lady named Jessica

As you are listening to this story, I want you to imagine the nature seen by Chuck on his adventurous walk.  What animals does he see?

  • Read “Shi-Shi-Etko” by Nicola Campbell on Epic

ACTIVITY to go along with the Books, as well as, our Class Read a loud that we finished last week.  “Wishtree”

Go on a Nature Walk with your family and be very observant.  What do you see?  What do you hear?  Do you see any animals on your walk?  Can you find any Oak trees?  Do you see any hollows are holes and spaces in any trees that a critter could make a home in?  If you can take some pictures and upload them on FreshGrade if you would like. OR you could draw a picture or make a picture book of your adventure/walk in your local area.  Try to focus on descriptive words for what you see hear or touch.  What are your special places?

Ms. Silva’s favourite place in this South Burnaby Area is Everett Crowley Park (It is so beautiful in there).  If you have never been in there…. try to check it out this summer.

  • The school year is coming to the end this week and we would like for you to share your favorite memories. Please work on this memory book (posted on FreshGrade) at your own pace. You may choose to do the whole book or just certain pages. We look forward to seeing them posted on Fresh Grade.

MATH

This week we are focusing on the measurement unit of kilometre. We use kilometre (km) as a measurement for long distances. For example, the distance from one city to another is measured in km. The distance from South Burnaby to Abbotsford is approximately 65 km.  The distance from your house to school could be 1km or 2 km (it could be more if you live further away).

One Kilometre is equal to 1000 metres, we can write it as:  1km= 1000m. In this week’s Math worksheet, you will be estimating for some questions. Remember that an estimate is a quick educated guess that is close enough to the right answer.  Please do all the questions on page 104.  For question 4b, estimate what unit of measurement you would use for the items, then answer. For example, a paper clip would be measured in cm not in m or km. Please see Fresh Grade for Math sheet.  Math is due on Friday, June 19th, please upload on Fresh Grade.

WRITING : There are two writing activities for this week: (both of the writing activities will be posted on Fresh Grade)

1) Father’s Day Card

 2) Core Competencies Reflection– This is required for report cards so please remember to upload it onto Fresh Grade when completed. If you are unable to upload onto Fresh Grade please email it to us.

SHH! Top Secret! This week we are working on a Father’s Day Card! You will be given a tie template–you will use both sides of the template.  On one side you will design a tie for your father (it can be polka dots, stripes, patterns etc.) and on the other side you will do a written message. Please choose to do ONE of the writing messages (below) on the back of your Father’s Day Tie Card. (see the examples posted on Fresh Grade).  Don’t forget to colour your tie design and fine line your writing. Remember that you are using both sides of the paper so use colors that won’t go through the paper. You can upload your card on Monday, June 22nd.

Choose ONE of these writing messages for your Father’s Day Card:

1)Brainstorm and write words that describe your Dad. For example: Loved, Caring, Courageous, Sporty. Fine line the words in pen or thin sharpie.

2) Write a poem for your Dad (it could be an acrostic poem, simile poem or another one of your choice) Fine line the poem in pen or thin sharpie.

3) Write ONE of the following messages on the back: (Fine line in felt or markers)

My Favourite Things About Dad:

I love my Dad because _______________________________________________________

My favourite thing about my Dad is ____________________________________________

My favourite thing my Dad does for me is_______________________________________

My favourite thing to do with my Dad is ________________________________________

OR

My Dad:

My Dad Loves to _____________________________________________________________

My Dad always says __________________________________________________________

My Dad is the best at _________________________________________________________

My Dad and I love to _________________________________________________________

I love my Dad because _______________________________________________________

2) CORE COMPETENCY– PERSONAL & SOCIAL. Please choose ONE characteristic and respond on it. For example, if I choose: I can show respect, kindness and support for others. I can respond either by drawing a picture showing me being kind and explain that picture in a sentence OR I can respond by writing about a time that I showed kindness to others (length of writing can be 4-6 lines). Core Competency sheet will be uploaded on Fresh Grade. Due by Friday, June 19th.

READING:

Wishtree by Katherine Applegate

This week I will be reading Chapter 46 -51 to you.  These are the last chapters of our book “Wishtree” and I am excited to find out what happens.

Assignment:

Do you think Red will be cut down or saved?  Do you think Stephen and Samar will find Francesca’s grandma’s journal?  If so, what will it say?  HMMM…  Can you make some predictions before you listen to the story?

  1. Submit your predictions of what you think will happen in these next chapters to Fresh Grade please BEFORE YOU LISTEN TO READING!!!!     DUE MONDAY by 9pm
    • Chapter 46-51 will not be posted until Tuesday morning.  I would like to see your predictions before you listen to the reading!
    • Once you have made your prediction please upload it to FreshGrade and we will post the chapter reading onto your portfolio.
  2. Listen to the reading of Wishtree Chapter 45-51 and create a book jacket for a second book to follow ‘Wishtree’

ART ACTIVITY:

Listen to the story Only One You by Linda Kranz (Isaiah, Aria, Amaya and Skye I know you have heard this story and done this activity, but this is a Div. 8 tradition we started last year so you get to do it again!)

This is a Reading assignment and also an ART assignment

Only One You by Linda Kranz

Art Activity to go with the story Only One You:

Last year Div.8- Room 6A started a tradition to have all students paint a Rock to be glued to the boarded window next to our outside door. Each rock, like each child, is unique

“There is only one you in this great big world.   Make it a better place.”

Go out and find a small FLAT Rock that is no larger than 5 cm in length and no wider than 3cm (these are MAXIMUM length and width, it certainly can be smaller).  Please follow these instructions as your rock will be glued to the wall outside our classroom and if the rock is too big or not flat it will not stay on the wall.

Now that you have a FLAT rock, decide which flat side is going to be the top that you will paint on.  Once you have decided that, you can then choose what your fish will look like. You can look for ideas in the video of the book.  Don’t forget to draw eyes and a mouth.  It will not matter which direction your fish is swimming as each will be unique.    Now you are ready to paint your fish!  The rock should be painted with acrylic paint.  It can be any colour or pattern you want. We will have a clear finisher that we will paint on each rock so it does not peel off or fade in the sun.

We will arrange a time for you to drop off your rock when you pick up your report cards and belongings from the school.  In the meantime, take a picture and post it on FreshGrade so we can see it!

TYPING CLUB

Twice a week for 10-15.

MATH

This week we are focusing on the measurement unit of metres. One metre is equal to 100 cm. You will be 1) measuring items in meters and 2)converting metres into centimeters. Sheets will be posted on Fresh Grade, please upload completed work by Friday, June 12th.  Do ALL of page one and only indicated questions for page 2.

Many of us do not have metre sticks at home so instead you may use measuring tape in centimetres (100cm), or you can measure and cut a piece of string or yarn that is a meter long. You may also measure an item by flipping your ruler over 3 times and then measuring 10 cm which will measure 100 cm (30cm + 30cm + 30cm + 10cm=100cm). This however will not be exactly 100cm or a metre –it will be slightly over, however, it will be fine for our purposes.

How to make your own metre stick (string) To do this, you will need: a ball of yarn/string or a long piece of string/yarn, a  ruler, scissors and a felt/sharpie.

  • Unravel your string or yarn and place your string on a flat surface like a long table, counter or the floor.
  • Place your ruler flat, starting at 0 and measure 30 centimeters. Place a felt mark on your string where it is 30 centimetres long.
  • Now place your ruler (0 cm) on your felt mark (where it was marked 30 cm) and measure another 30 centimetres, place a felt mark on your string (your string should be 60 cm long now).
  • Again,  starting at 0 and measure 30 centimetres, mark it with your felt (your string should be 90 cm long now).
  • Place your ruler starting with 0 where your felt mark is but this time only measure up to 10 cm because you only need to measure up to 100 cm Remember one  metre is 100 cm long (30cm + 30cm + 30cm +10cm). Your string should measure 1 metre or 100 centimetres (double check that you have the correct measurement).
  • Now you are ready to measure!
  • For the second sheet, please do the following questions: # 3 ALL, #4 b and f, #5 b and f, #6 b and f, Bonus optional. For this sheet you need to convert metres into centimetres– you will multiply your metre measurement by 100 because (1 m= 100 cm).  See below.

For example, if I want to know what 4 metres equals in centimetres, I will multiply 4 by 100= 400. So 4m x 100 = 400 centimetres.

2 m= ___________ cm  I know that 2 is X by 100 (2 X 100= 200) so 2m= 200cm

If I have to change metres into centimetres and my measurement is 2 m 8 cm . I will do the following:

I know that 2m = 200 cm (because 2 x 100= 200)

So 2m 8cm

= 200 + 8 cm

= 208 cm

Writing: SHH! Top Secret! This week we are not writing a poem, instead we are writing a message or memory that will be part of a book. Ms. Driussi is retiring this year and we are working on a special project for her along with the rest of the school. Our school is creating a book for her and every class is making a collage page as part of that book. You can choose to write about 1 of the following ideas:

  • What will Ms. Driussi do when she retires? (3-6 sentences long)
  • Words/Sentences that describe Ms. Driussi. (generate a list of 5-10 words or you could use metaphors and similes in your sentences–3-6 sentences)
  • Favorite memories of Driussi. (3-6 sentences long)

Please have an illustration to go with your writing. Don’t forget to neatly colour and fine line your picture and check your spellings. Use a legal-size paper (printer paper 8.5 by 11 inches) Don’t forget you put your division number on your page. See examples posted on Fresh Grade. Once you are done please upload it on Fresh Grade. Please make sure to have it in by Friday, June 12th  as we need to compile all the work into book page—Thank  you!

  • Work on assigned work in IXL .  Measurement lessons first, when finished then work on other units.

READING:

Wishtree by Katherine Applegate

This week I will be reading Chapter 36 -45 to you.

Assignment:

  • Listen to my reading of Wishtree Chapter 36-45 (a link will be on Fresh Grade)
  • This week I would like you to pretend you are one of the characters in the book. You will be writing a Diary Entry in your Diary. Write about how you are and what you have been up to. Explain what is happening and how you are feeling about it all.

Here is an Example:

Dear Diary,

I am filled with mix emotions at the moment. First, I am feeling joy and contentment.  I have spent the last few days trying super hard to find Samar a friend.  I tried many different little tricks to just have her and Stephen interact, whether it was just over returning homework or taking care of a sick opossum.  I really thought that if Stephen and Samar were face to face they would just start talking and would eventually build a friendship.  Well, I was right!  Finally, when Bongo dropped Samar’s wish on Stephen’s window sill, he came down to visit me and Samar in the middle of the night.  They began talking and before I knew it, I broke my ONE RULE.  I spoke to them and explained the story of the Wishing tree.  I know I should not have spoken to them, but I felt it was the only thing I could do.  IT WORKED!  Samar and Stephen are talking and walking to school together.  I think they are becoming friends.  Yeah!!  I am happy about this.

The other emotions I am feeling is fear and sadness.  I am scared as Francesca is planning to have me cut down.  I know I have lived a good life.  I am over 200 years old but …I think I still have a lot of life left in me.  I am strong and provide shelter and protection for many creatures.  I am still healthy, and people depend on me to give them hope.  Every May 1st  hundreds of people come to tie a wish on me and HOPE that I will grant that wish.  What will this little town do without a Wishtree?  Who will give them hope?  This makes me so sad.  I will miss the people and the animals who are all my friends.  Bongo will be missed the most.  She is my best friend!  As I say goodbye to all of the creatures who have now found new homes in other trees and areas in the neighbourhood, and watch Stephen and Samar walk side by side to school, I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I have done what I came to this world to do.  Till we meet again Dairy!

Love,

Red

WRITING:

  • We are learning about a new poem this week called the 5 W Poem. Please remember to illustrate your poem as well. Due by Friday, June 5th

 What is a 5W poem?

A 5W poem is a 5  line poem that does not rhyme. It tells a story/idea by answering the 5W’s (Who? What? When?  Where? Why?). Your poem does not have questions written in it, only the answers to the questions.

How to Write a 5W Poem:

First think of a topic or idea.

Line 1: Answer Who (or what) the poem about?

Line 2: Answer What he/she/it is doing?

Line 3: Answer When is this action taking place?

Line 4: Answer Where does it take place?

Line 5: Answer Why does it take place?

See the sample below for 5W poem about a frog

Your will choose your own topic, this is just a sample.

Planning Page

Remember to add details/details in your poem when answering your 5W questions.

My topic: a frog

Line 1 Who: Little tree frog (I am giving detail here, it’s not just a frog, but a little tree frog)

Line 2: What: Sitting so still

Line 3: When: In the morning light

Line 4 Where: On the branch outside my kitchen window

Line 5: Why: While I’m waiting for my breakfast

 READING:

Wishtree by Katherine Applegate

This week I will be reading Chapter 28 – 35.  First, listen to the reading of Chapter 28 -35.  You may want to take some notes while I am reading the chapters about what is happening in the story.  This will help you keep the events in order.

Assignment:

This week will be to write a Summary of the chapters read. Before Spring Break we were working on summaries so I hope you remember how to write a good summary.  Remember a summary should be telling major details that happen in the chapters  read (do not worry about the little details)  and should be written in the order they occur in the story.

For Example:  If I were writing a summary of some of the chapter’s we have already read I would not be talking about the boy carving the word LEAVE on Red after I talk about the Red’s plan to find Samar a friend.  First, the boy carved the word LEAVE on red and then a few days later Red came up with a plan to help find a friend for Samar.

Summary Worksheet will be sent out through Fresh Grade. Please hand into Fresh Grade through Student Upload. Due June 5th

WRITING:

We are learning about a new poem this week called a Diamante Poem. Please see the planning page for the Diamante Poem on Fresh Grade. See below on how to write a Diamante  poem.

What is a Diamante Poem?

A diamante (pronounced dee-uh-MAHN-Tay) poem is a seven-line poem that doesn’t rhyme. The beginning and ending lines are the shortest, with one word, while the lines in the middle are longer, giving diamante poems a diamond shape. “Diamante” is the Italian word for diamond, so this poem is named after its diamond shape.

There are two different types of Diamante poems, a synonym diamante and antonym diamante. This week we will be writing an Antonym (opposite) Diamante, which is similar to the Cinquain poem that we wrote last week.

How to Write an Antonym Diamante Poem?

Think of two opposites. Your first line will be one opposite and your last line will be the other.

Line 1  One word for your topic.

Line 2  Two (adjectives) or describing words about your topic in line 1.

Line 3 Three (verbs) or action words ending in “ing” telling about your topic in line 1.

Line 4 Four nouns (person, place or thing) in total. The first two words (nouns) will be about your first topic in line 1 and the last two words (nonus) will be about your opposite topic in line 7.

Line 5 Three (verbs) or action words ending in “ing” telling about your topic in line 7.

Line 6 Two (adjectives) or describing words about your topic in line 7.

Line 7 This line is one word that is the opposite of your topic in line 1.

See the sample below for an Antonym Diamante poem on Dog and Cat.

Your will choose your own topic, this is just a sample.

Before writing your poem think of two opposites that you want to write about. For example, Dog and Cat. So your first line will be dog and the last line will be cat.

Line 1 Would be Dog and Line 7 will be Cat

Line 2 Two words to describe a dog: Playful, Spirited

Line 3 Three verbs describing a dog: Barking, Licking, Drooling

Line 4 Four nouns describing Dog and Cat. The first two nouns describe a dog: Dalmatian, Beagle, the last two nouns describe a cat: Siamese, Persian. This is the line where you change to the opposite topic–you are now writing about a cat.

Line 5 Three verbs describing a cat: Pouncing, Cleaning, Scratching

Line 6 Two words to describe a cat: Graceful, Sleek

Line 7: Cat

See the picture sample on Fresh Grade. Please draw a picture/illustration to go with your poem. Your planning sheets will be posted on Fresh Grade.

Writing Due Friday, May 29th.

READING:

Wishtree: by Katherine Applegate

This week I will be reading Chapter 20 – 27.  First, listen to the reading of Chapter 20 -27.  As I read, I would like you to listen to the little voice in your head.  That’s what helps you comprehend the text at a deep level of understanding.  We’re going to practice this reading strategy as I read to you this week. (I know that I had many different thoughts as I read the text and I will model that for you.) As I read the text, I want you to record your inner thoughts on a sticky note. What are you thinking about or wondering about as I am reading.  After I read a few pages, I will stop and discuss some thoughts I have with you. Then I will continue to read and you can take more notes again.  We’ll repeat this process until I finish the chapters.

Assignment:

  • Listen to my reading of Wishtree Chapter 20- 27 (a link to the reading will be on Fresh Grade). Make sure you have some paper or sticky notes with you while you listen.
  • Complete.  My Inner Voice Recording Sheet. Write about what you were thinking when I was reading Wishtree to you.  (Use the notes you made on sticky notes while I was reading to help you with this Recording Sheet)

Worksheet and reading will be posted on Fresh grade.

Raz Kids: Please complete running record assigned on Raz Kids

Chapter book:

I am hoping you are getting close to the end of your chapter book.  (for some of you ONE of your books).  Please continue to read the chapter book given to you. You will be asked to give a presentation on this book in the second week of June (June 8-12th ). To start thinking about your presentation please see the post on Fresh Grade for the Paper Bag Book Report.   If you are finished your chapter book you may start this assignment.  It looks like a large assignment but it is not !  Most important is you know what your book is about and can explain what happened in the story in the order that it occurred.  Secondly, whether you liked the book or not. Lastly, if you would recommend the book to your classmates.

WRITING:

We will be starting our poetry unit for writing. Since Mother’s Day is this weekend please write a Mother’s Day Poem for your Mom. You will be given a choice between a Simile Poem or an Acrostic Poem. Choose ONE poem to do. A Simile is when you compare two things that are not alike (unlike things)  using the words like or as.

The boy was a quiet as a mouse. (Here we are comparing a boy’s quietness to that of a mouse)

The wind howled like a wolf. (Here we are comparing the wind’s noise to that of wolf howling).

The man is as tall as a building. (Here we are saying that the man is very tall since we are comparing him to a  building).

Try to finish these examples:  She walked as slow as a ________________

He slept like a ______________

She swam as smoothly as a ______________________________

We are as busy as _________________________________

The second poem is an Acrostic Poem. This is poem of words or phrases that describe a certain topic. The poem is written vertically (up and down) and the first letter of each line describes or spells out a word or phrase that is related to that topic.

For example, here is an acrostic poem about cats.

Cute, cuddly kittens

Always getting into trees

Talks with a ‘”meow”

Silently, scampering around the house

Now, choose to write either a Simile or Acrostic Poem for your Mom. I have included a brainstorming page where you can brainstorm your ideas before writing your Mother’s Day Poem (on Fresh Grade). I have also included the poem templates for you to choose from (on Fresh Grade). Please write neatly and fine line your poem. Once you finish your poem upload it on Fresh Grade.

*Don’t forget to do something helpful for your Mom on Sunday, May 10.*

READING:   Wishtree by Katherine Applegate

This will be a book that Mrs. Silva will be reading out loud to you every week.  This week Mrs. Silva will be reading Chapter 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Before we read a book, it’s important for us to make predictions about the book or text we are going to read. We’ve already studied how to make reasonable predictions this year, but before we begin reading our next book, I’d like for us to revisit making predictions. For the next six weeks, we’re going to read Wishtree. I’m not going to tell you much about the book, yet. Instead, I want you to look at the title, cover, and author of the book and use that information to make a prediction about the book. It’s perfectly fine if your predictions are not correct or exact, because we can all change our predictions as we read.

Assignment:

1) Complete the Making Predictions recording sheet (Posted on Fresh Grade. Looking closely at the cover, and title see if you can find any clues that will help you make a prediction about what the book might be about. Please upload on Fresh grade when finished. Due Friday, May 1st.

2) Listen to reading of Wishtree Chapter 1-4 on Fresh Grade and after you finish listening to the 4 chapters:

3) Complete the Establishing What I know recording sheet. (on Fresh Grade) On the recording sheet, you will identify the setting (where is the story taking place?) and the main character. I also want you to draw a picture of what you have visualized as I read. Please upload on Fresh grade when finished. Due Friday, May 1st.

***The middle part is Optional: You can tell me three things you have discovered about the text, it can be in relation to anything related to the book.

 SCIENCE:

Experiments need to done with a parent under their supervision please! Choose to do ONE of the following egg experiments (these will be put on Fresh Grade). You will be sent a Science Lab Sheet to complete through Fresh Grade. Remember to include your: title, prediction (explain what do you think will happen and why), observations(draw and write what you saw/noticed) and conclusion (what did you learn from this experiment)? Please make sure to draw and color your diagrams and label and explain them neatly. Please upload on Fresh grade when finished. Science Lab Due by Sunday, May 3rd.

ADST:

There is nothing for this week. Just a friendly reminder to start collecting recyclable materials for a building project. Chick Journal Entry for Days 1-9

Our chick eggs are continuing to develop and grow, and we are on day 9 of our egg development calendar! There have been many changes inside the egg. The chick that is growing inside the egg is called an embryo (please see the picture below about the embryo).

Task/Assignment: Once you have read the changes that are happening inside the egg, you are to choose one day of development and write a journal entry from the perspective of the embryo. Think about the following things: What do you think it’s like living inside and egg? What do you think you can hear, see and feel? This is very similar to the writing that we did in 1st term, where we wrote a diary entry from the perspective of a crayon when we read The Day the Crayons Came Home written by Drew Daywalt.

Criteria:

  • Start with Dear Diary or Dear Journal,
  • Make sure that you write about the changes that are happening to your embryo
  • Do you have a catchy beginning and interesting ending?
  • Are there details and description?
  • Show don’t tell!
  • Use triple scooped words
  • Entry should be 8-12 long.

Due: April 17th Friday Evening (Please submit via Fresh Grade)

Please see the following Journal Entry Sample Written by and Embryo for Day 3.

Dear Diary,

Can I let you in on a secret? Don’t tell anyone what I’m about to tell you…I am a CHICKEN! No, I don’t mean chicken, like a bird, I mean C-H-I-C-K-E-N!!! Still don’t get it? Here’s a clue: “Cluck, Cluck Cluck” No, I am not clucking right now!!! Ughh! CHICKEN, like a scaredy cat!

Oh No! I don’t want to think about cats right now! Anyways, what I mean is that I’m scared! Terrified! Anyone in my situation would be a chicken! It’s dark inside here! I’m all alone, well inside my egg I am (I know there’s twelve other embryos next to me). I mean who isn’t scared of the dark? To make matters worse, I’ve been hearing loud noises! I’m not imagining things! I’m also not making it up! It’s a LOUD, BEATING noise, that’s coming inside the egg, it’s like a drum, going “thump, thump, thump”. As each hour passes it gets louder! Please help me! You got to get me out of here!!

Please note that the following pictures were from a unit purchased on Teachers Pay Teachers and created and copyright by Teacher’s Breathing Space. Please do not forward or use the pictures for any other purposes other than to share with your child the stages of the developing egg. Thank you!
