Halloween Costumes… What Were They Thinking?

Halloween, as we learned about, has quite a history behind it. We learned about its old Christian and Celtic roots, and how today it has become a commercialised festivity. One such way that it has become commercial is how much people spend on it- from candy to costumes. We learned that people dressed up in scary costumes, but sadly some people in today’s society, do not understand how hurtful and humourless their costume choices can be.

One of my favourites is when people dress up in another person’s cultural dress. For example, some of the popular ones are: a Kimono (Japan), Saree (India), Thobe/Keffiyeh (Arab), or Aboriginal clothing… which are NOT Halloween costumes!

But unfortunately, we should have written this post before a large group of elementary teachers decided to make a very terrible mistake. This is how:

Another now-deleted picture from the school's Facebook page showed staff members dressed in sombreros with maracas.

And sadly… it get’s much, much, MUCH worse…

A since-deleted photo posted to the Facebook page of the Middleton School District.

These pictures were posted on the school district’s Facebook page but were quickly removed. But just to briefly summarise- the top picture is a bunch of teachers wearing very stereotypical

Mexican dress with maracas (instruments) and sombreros (Mexican hats). If you look

really closely, the lady in the middle’s hat reads ‘Mexican.’ The bottom picture is a group of teachers holding a wall which says ‘Make American Great Again.’ Remember who spoke of the wall and why?

Yep, none other than Trump, who said that a wall between Mexico and the US would stop 99% of illegal Mexican immigrants- many of whom are drug dealers. (Obviously, a completely and utterly false and racist remark).

These teachers are from Idaho, US. Idaho is located by Washington and Montana… they are very close to Canada.

So now it is your turn to weigh in on this. Do you think that these individuals made an innocent mistake which was not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings? Or do you think that they should have known better than to dress and act in an insulting manner? How would you feel if your ethnicity or culture was Mexican? Would this have offended you? Since these individuals are teachers (clearly not as great as yours :)), does this affect your opinion of the situation at all? Remember to write detailed answers which are roughly 20 (grade 5) to 25 (grade 6) sentences.

The racism and negativity that these people show is very offensive. It isn’t a harmless act, neither is it innocent. With the right mindset or just straight up not being stupid could prevent them from doing these things. Besides, if they were sending it out as a joke many people will still find it insulting especially the who are associated in the culture. If the meant it as innocent/ not harmful they wouldn’t have showed up that very day with those stupid costumes. It offended us as much as it offended the Mexican people. it probably was a nightmare to put ourselves into their shoes. If we say that post floating across the internet it would terrify many people, because the racism that was shown in the two pictures are still shown by many across the globe. The Mexicans probably would’ve been very ashamed of such behaviour and maybe even depressed for all the hate that is being put on their cultures. Being mocked for such and act just like building the wall can take serious affects to them. They could react to the post and say insulting things to the people ( still isn’t okay) which would usually end in more convictions. The post could bounce back at them and it could start a war between both sides. More violent behaviour would come out from the people who are being offended and the end result wouldn’t be the brightest of days. If the y had stopped from posting that one picture it would have let to a brighter look on their culture and the people who are facing the backlash from many offenders, as I think that they shouldn’t be doing these things no matter what culture their in, no matter if their meaning it as a joke because many people look a t these posts in a Super negative way. Considering these people are licensed adults to teach I may not have very much power to these adults but, if everybody looks at these people in a ways as horrifying as they displayed my opinion matters as much as everybody’s who defend the Mexicans do.

Hi there my name is Arnav and i would be telling you about what just happened lately. There were these group of teachers who wore Mexican clothing for Halloween and if i was Mexican i would feel offended and disrespected. Than there was a group of teachers who were a wall that Donald trump was planing to make. Here’s why he wants to build a wall between mexico and america. He thinks Mexican people are drug dealers ,killers. and he thinks they sexual assault people and rape them so overall he thinks there bad people so he wants to build a wall so the Mexican cant come illegally. which i think is the stupidest idea that a presdiant would come up with. These teachers were really offensive and raciest and if i was Mexican i would feel like punching them. these teachers are grown adults they should know better for example if a kid was wearing that costume its understandable but if a grown adult was wearing that, that is just fully messed up. These teachers were still getting paid but getting decided to get fired. Now if i was Mexican i would feel crestfallen because of all the bad things people assume about Mexican people like some Mexican people are bad same with US same with Canada same with all the countries in our world. Not just mexico. I would also wonder why does Donald trump think this his making assumptions his making wrong decisions overall i think Mexicans are great people there food personality there wonderful people trump just thinks about the negative stuff. personally if i was Donald trump i would quit my job because he is a horrible president just disgust me. So this made it even worse they posted on Facebook it instantly got removed and it went viral and has lots of hate. So thats it know you know just a little Mexican Halloween can change a lot in the world. These teachers are abousltly idiots.

  3. kenrich1 says:

I think that this is not allowed and probably never will heres why. Firstly this is violating property this is complete sexest idiotic and just wrong. Next these dumb Peeps are just annoying. So this just wrong I mean its ok to be them yeah im looking at you Donald trump heh Justin timberlake. However they are just wearing them are racist to the extreme yes extreme LOL. Next sometimes they can be not racist like i enjoyed being peter pan 1 year but being like their culture is wrong thanks dumba** you know this is wrong and people still do it. That should not happen because we have other cool costumes like princesses, witches, superheros, or even the cookie monster. All of these ae even better costumes dont be racist. Next it is offending others. Wearing costumes of other kind its ok but if they see you wearing their culture costume they will be mad im not playing around or being unconscionable. Plus they might throw you to jail for some days weeks or even months! Finally It is clearly not exceptionable. Wearing racist costumes is frobitan in this school and should be forbittan in all schools heck racist costumes should be extinct. Racist sum is not nice at all. You are being mean, acting like B****es and worse just doing it. you arent being nice and/or helping people. You are just wrong Not only that but lots of people dont care at all. So they are wearing their cloths for bad reasons here are they. think its ok, supporting certain countries, and offending other contries. So they are just hating people thats what im trying to say. Well guys now you know it is very mean to do that but thanks for watching me rage and subscribe to KenrichTheGamingKid.

Theses very racist and stupid teachers dressed up as Mexicans for Halloween. but that was a very offensive move to the Mexicans because they were making fun of it. If I was Mexican then I would probably put a virus on every body’s computer and only stop it if somebody executed those teachers and then brought their heads to me. Then I would hijack the military base and steal a missile launcher and a fast jet. Then I would kidnap Rump and then boil him for twenty hours. Then burn him until all is left is ashes . Then bury each ash in the different parts of the world three kilometres under the ground…
I think that Rump and Those teachers are really racist and that is a problem to worry about

  5. jemimah1 says:

i think that what the teachers did were not okay. they should know better or at least not do that in a school. i cant even give them the benefit of the doubt, since at least one of those teachers must have watched the news and must have had known what might happen but still did it any way for jokes sake.i don’t even know why they posted it on Facebook. they must have known that they could get backlash but instead of keeping it to themselves and never doing it again they decided that it didn’t matter and just posted it. it was even more annoying when the principal had to apologise and the teachers just didn’t say anything at all. if it was me i would get upset that they were disrespecting my heritage and where i was from. it is just not okay to be rude and not saying that your sorry after you did something that was not acceptable. it was even worse that it was teachers. teachers that have Mexican kids in there class. kids that would probably get offended if they are older. if they were random people and were in a office, i would probably be a bit more generous with it. it is the fact that it were teachers. people that would probably be doing a test about presidents and would be teaching about Trump, that is what make it way, way, worse. i guess that it is just the fact that they should know better! it is so easy to choose a different group outfit but no! they decided that that was a good idea. it just that it was so easy to avoid this problem. just do something else and none of this would happen. so i think it is obvious what my opinion is. they should have just not done it or at the very least, have not had posted it thinking everyone would be fine with it. then we would not have had this problem in the first place. so with everything i think it is clear. that those teachers need to go to school all over again*(or at least learn the rules). at least they are not teaching right now! but there getting payed to stay away. i wish they were fired.

  6. jason78 says:

I think that the teacher who posted their Halloween costume on Facebook were offensive. Because they were fake moustache, fake hat, fake music instrument. Another reason why they were offensive because they were smiling and laughing about it. Another because they seem like they enjoy making fun of the Mexican and they were dancing. And they were Mexican student in the school or high school. And on Facebook I saw

  7. amelia15 says:

I think this is very offensive i guess this costume was suppose to be funny but it was obviously a horrible mistake. they are suppose to be teachers they are suppose to teach you make you learn new and good things for the future. But what this picture demonstrates is racism, because the teachers just slapped on clothes that don’t actually look like Mexican’s traditional clothing. And i think it is very immature that the paper cardboard said “make America great again” though what they show here doesn’t demonstrate how this makes America great again. I find that Trump influences bad things for people world wide, for example Trump showed these careless teachers that Mexicans have to pay for the wasteful wall. I think it’s also stupid to see them smile and actually look happy but behind this its pretty offensive. This could have been avoided if they only thought about it a little more then then this could be a problem totally avoided. There were Mexican related students in that school which i wonder why the staff even though of how the kids would feel. The teachers probably though that this was a joke and though it would be funny but its but its totally inappropriate i cant believe that adults would choose to do to this for a Halloween costume. I’m just wondering why teachers would even do something like this its totally unexceptional for the school and the students. Its tell me and the people seeing this that you can dress up as somebody and go to school and make fun of them and their culture. Why would anybody even think that this would be funny? I think that its is very bad for the school’s reputation. I wonder would kids fell that their school’s environment isn’t safe and its is offensive so would they have to transfer schools? How would the parents react if they saw this in their child’s school? I’m just sad how the teachers would have chosen and agreed to do this if they could have just realised their mistake earlier before making this bad idea of posting in on the internet! How its a bad reputation for the school and the staff themselves and now its a complete mess for the school and its even worse how it is on the internet so everybody can see it. I wonder how many people thought this was funny? And how many people thought that it was a very racist mistake. Looking at their “Mexican” costumes i fell that they don’t even know how they dress and i with that they could have tried harder. And instead of having a rainbow blanket over their shoulders they could have done something more creative that actually looks like the real traditional clothing and instruments instead if making sloppy versions of the real things. Or they could have used their brains and could have stuck to being a onezie unicorn for Halloween or even a garbage bag cause that is what they are. I wonder why they chose to pick out such a horrible costume? And i’m not sure why they could have chosen a way better group costumes like an actual educational one! I just wish that Trump was never America’s president because he’s a bad influence to younger kids and they make bad memes about him. I wonder why adults would do such a silly and dumb mistake? And think that it was funny.

  8. tiya1 says:

I think that these teacher should have known better than to dress up like Mexican’s on Halloween because it was really is insulting manner to the people who are Mexican! They should apologise to the the people there making fun of. If my culture was Mexican I would have felt really bad and insulted because they would be making fun of the culture that I am. I don’t understand that why people don’t have the mind to think about what they are doing! I would also feel that Mexican’s are not wanted and would feel really offended. I am also really shocked because these people are teachers and they are not suppose to support to people who are being racist and mean. For example teachers are supposed to teach about this to give awareness not to do it. They should not do it there self.
I think that people should’ve have awareness about if there being racist, rude , or disrespectful to other people’s culture or life. But if you don’t those people will think bad about themselves all there life because of your bad behaviour.
If somebody dressed up like a Indian if there white and they would be like. “Hey I am a Indian!”
I would feel really offended because I’m a Indian and also because their making fun of my culture and of who I am.
But did they know that what they were doing was wrong? For example some times people do not learn things like this that’s why some people do such mean things like this. My other question is that why do people make fun of other people who have different skin tones? Everybody is kind and loving! Why does matter if your skin couler is different? I hope those teachers and everybody else start to think if they are doing something helpful or something really mean. Also I hope that all the places get better in kindness and friendship! In conclusion SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!!!!!:(

I feel that the teachers at that school did not make a innocent mistake.Or why else would they have people dress up as Mexicans AND have a wall that says MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN why would they say that if they were not doing it on purpose ? They were TEACHERS at a ELEMENTARY school. In the article that Ms.Panesar linked mentioned that 13% of the school was HISPANIC. If I was a person with background from Mexico then I would feel insulted by the costumes that the teachers were wearing and be astonished that the teachers , the role models of the school were wearing insulting costumes of my race. I would have been really upset by those racist costumes that they were wearing, so much so that it might have ruined a completely good day. Some of the teachers were being stereotypical of Mexicans by wearing mustaches, sombreros, and holding maracas which is to me extremely extremely racist.I feel like if they were people in other jobs the situations may be just a little better for them but it is still racist to Mexicans.I feel like that they should have known better than dress in someone else’s race and insult it in such a bad way that the the already bad situation is even worse. The video that the superintendent of the school district placed on the facebook page that apologized to everyone may have helped angry people calm down and forgive the teachers (not completely). I feel like the teachers should have thought of what would happen if they wore that costume to school before they decide to do it . THat is what adults have always been telling us but sometimes they need to listen to their own advice as it may apply to them as well as to students. I hope that the investigations may find out what are those teachers motives and ( hopefully ) get them fired from their jobs. I do not know why they can get paid by the school to not go to school/ work , they should not get any money to not go to work at the school. And I hope that they may learn their lesson from this very very bad thing they did and they will not do it ever again against any race not only Mexicans. I cannot imagine what the poor students of those bad bad teachers felt when they walked into class that day on Halloween and saw their teachers , role models wearing a costume so offensive to Mexicans and just overall rude. I hope that those teachers learn better next time ( if there is one).

I feel that that the teachers dressing up in Mexican outfits and in the Donald trump wall are not innocent at all and they should be either suspended for their actions for at least a month or two or they could be fired personally I would fire them. The teachers should know a lot better since they are teachers and some of there students have Mexican backgrounds. If I was a Mexican student I would be very offended and confused since the teachers are dressing up as Mexican people I would probably be very offended. If they were other classmates though I would probably be a lot less offended but still offended. Even if I wasn’t a Mexican I would still be offended because I am very against Americans/US citizens making fun of Mexican-Americans and Mexican people because its just very rude. I think that the school district should be taking more action to make sure other teachers should not do something like this. For example I think that the school district should ban it for g teachers to dress up like that so they don’t like dress up as i don’t know like Hitler and stopping the Jews from getting in his country or something like that very racist I think. I don’t even know what I would do if I was one of those teachers and I dressed up as that and got sent home and I was being payed to stay home. I would probably just try to find another job at subway or like Kentucky fried chicken or something, But if I got criminal charges that would be a hole different story. If was the principle I would fire them right away or I would suspend them for a good ten months. If I was a parent though I would either do a angry parent talk. Something like this WHY DO YOU DISRESPECT MY CHILD WHERE DID YOU LEARN YOUR MANNERS! Then if I had enough money I would sue them or report them to the police or something like that. I am Chinese and for me if someone dressed up as I with a cheongsam or a 旗袍 and started saying look how ugly this looked! I would be very offended and I would most likely like slap them or something. If it was my teacher dressing up I would be very sad for them since they did it in front of children and there students might also be Chinese. Also I don’t even know the Chinese language! never mind the looks of the dresses and stuff. I can’t also always identify if someone is trying to mean or accidentally said something unknowingly being rude. I also am normally fine if someone makes jokes. I also am Christian so I am offended easily if you say something about my religion being bad or something.

Hi everybody, my name is Milica Pavlovic and this as you can see here, people are making fun of other people’s cultures. You ask me what I think of this. Well , I think that this is very wrong and rude. now I will be telling you all the reasons why I think that.

Firstly, dressing up like other people is very wrong are rude for many reasons but the main reason is that when you dress up like somebody from another culture. It is rude because it represents… Trump, Mexico and other cultures , racism, discrimination and just basically just making fun of how those people dress, look, sound etc. . As you can see from the pictures above, those teachers weren’t thinking and they decided that it would be a good idea to dress up like Mexicans and like Trump’s wall and make fun of the Mexicans culture. Sadly there were some Mexican kids at the school that those teachers were teaching at. were teaching at. Gladly those teachers got fired at the end of that whole situation. All of this stuff happened in Idaho, USA. Firstly, dressing up like other people is very wrong are rude for many reasons but the main reason is that when you dress up like somebody from another culture. It is rude because it represents… Mexico and other cultures , racism, discrimination and just basically just making fun of how those people dress, look, sound etc. . Sadly there were some Mexican kids at the school that those teachers were teaching at. were teaching at. Gladly those teachers got fired at the end of that whole situation. All of this stuff happened in Idaho, USA.

Secondly, those teachers should have used their brain and maybe thought about if it would hurt anybody’s feelings. Since they are teachers they should be role models for the kids in that class and for the kids in that school. They are supposed to be teaching the kids not to do that but instead they decided that it would be funny to make fun of Mexican people. It seems that those teachers thought that it was funny and those teachers did not do this on accident they totally did this on purpose. Hopefully, those teachers that did nonsense learned from they’re mistakes.

Thirdly, I don’t think that it is fair that they put all of that rudeness on the Mexicans. Trump put enough rude word and bad descriptions about Mexicans on TV and social media. Trump keeps on saying how Mexicans are Drug dealers and he was also saying some things about Mexicans that are unfortunately racist. But since Trump is very selfish he only thinks about himself and his money. He doesn’t think about maybe how other people feel. I could just picture how I would feel if I was Mexican. These are probably all of the feelings that I would feel if I was Mexican. I would feel…sad, mad, furious, token for granted and most of all I would feel like I am to weak to stand up to Trump and try to defend my country.

Well, there you have it , know you know all of my thoughts on how Trump is being very mean and rude to Mexicans. Now, if those former teachers that you saw up there if you are reading this I terribly hope that you learned your lesson because what you did was not funny and it was super mean. I hope you guys enjoyed my little lesson on how Mexicans are treated very badly.

I feel that the pictures are the so offensive and the teachers that did they should go to jail. They knew that this was so bad and they knew it. They must of hurt so many feelings when this was upload on Facebook . It does not help if you have a job that is Mexican job or anything like that. I can still not believe that some people did this. I know that for Halloween I was Donald Trump, but Mexico is to far. If I was Mexican I will feel bad inside like I suck the most. I would feel like Mexicans are dumb and want to be someone else. Halloween is a holiday that is scary not meant to be mean at all. So why not we stop this madness and show some love. But for real it was just a funny joke and maybe not meant. Like when I got that mask for Halloween, I didn’t know that it was maybe bad. But now I know that maybe it’s mean to Trump. People need to stand up for each other and stop this. This is not just for Mexicans but also for other countries as well. We should not be aloud to do theses things on Facebook. I’ve been to Mexico and it’s a nice place to visit. If I was Mexican I would be very angry and think you people need to stop. I have so many feelings for theses Mexicans, but I have one thing to say, we should be sorry. I hope this never happens again and I’m sorry Mexico.

  13. beatrice7 says:

Honestly, I think that those teachers made a mistake that was innocent, and thought that they were just being funny. However, I still think that the mistake was huge and I think they also need to think about whether that was the right thing to do, to make fun of a person’s own cultural background. I think the Mexican costumes and the “Wall of Trump” costumes are connected, and I feel like that is an insult to people with Mexican background, because if those people lived in U.S and saw people in those costumes, they would think that their own background is nothing but garbage. Even though, I think the “Trump’s Wall” costume is more offensive than the Mexican people costume because if you wear that, it will look like you are appreciating that country by wearing their traditional clothes. On the other hand, the “Trumps’s Wall” is more offensive because it technically says, “Oh, America is way better than Mexico. It’s a good thing Trump builds this wall so that no more Mexicans can enter America,”If I were a Mexican person, I would act like nothing in the world had offended me, but inside, I would feel hurt and would never want to go to a school that wouldn’t mind and don’t care that the TEACHERS (of all people) were being racist. Even if I were NOT those Mexican kids, I would have still felt offended because what the teachers are doing isn’t a good thing. Even though I think that those teachers were only trying to be funny, I think it is still bad because Mexico is a targeted country by D.T (aka Donald Trump). I wouldn’t like it if my culture was being made fun of. I think that despite them being teachers, I think that they were acting like students, making fun of a certain culture. It’s more typical for a naughty (as in jerk) student to be racist for example saying, Islamic people are terrorists, than a teacher to say that. Since children don’t know better than adults do, it makes more sense that they act more insensitive than the teachers. But since they are teachers, it looks like the teachers are being more insensitive than children. Also, it is wrong for teachers to be racist is because the elementary students depend on their teachers, because they only go to elementary school from Kindergarten then in Grade 5 they start junior high.I feel very lucky to have teachers in our school who are sometimes strict, yes, but they are not racist or they make a certain country look bad.I feel lucky because the teachers at our school have a total no-no to racist. If somebody at my school wore Indonesian traditional clothes without making fun of me, I would feel like somebody appreciates my culture. If somebody wears Indonesian clothes to make fun of me, I won’t feel very good; I would be very embarrassed. I also realize that it is very weird that those teachers are being racist to Mexico because apparently, learning Spanish language is part of a typical students’ curriculum, once you are in Grade 5 in America. To be honest, I have experienced having my culture being made fun of at school while I was practising an Indonesian dance routine last year, and since I used to do that every day, because I never played with people and that was what I do when I am bored, three boys decided to redo a part one of the steps of the dance over and over again, which they actually did incorrectly. 2 seconds after I saw what was going on and what they were doing, I kept walking, but I had stopped practising my routine because I was almost going to cry, and because I felt embarrassed. So technically, I have experienced having a culture I am most proud of being made fun of by people I apparently don’t like. I really hope that those stupid teachers will understand their mistake. But that is probably less likely since Trump is against Mexico.

  14. bernice4 says:

My opinion on this inappropriate situation: I think that these teachers did not just make a grave mistake. I feel like these teachers meant to be racist because of a few reasons:reason # 1: They are TEACHERS. If I were a teacher, I would probably know what is offensive / hurtful right?!? reason # 2: I don’t think that it is an accident that the teachers decided to make the wall of trump and dress up as Mexicans at the same time (after all I think that everybody knows that trump plans to make a wall to keep out Mexicans). The wall even said MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. If I were one of those teachers I would be apologising right now, in fact if I were one of those teachers, I wouldn’t even have dressed up as Mexicans and the wall of trump. I can’t believe that TEACHERS would be stupid enough to do it, and the fact that 13% of the students that go to the school are Hispanic just make the situation worse!! If I were Mexican I would have felt like running back home and not going back to school ever again. It would probably be bad enough to ruin a perfectly good day.( good thing my teacher would never do this sort of thing.) If I were a Mexican child going to that school, I would feel as though my culuture is not respected and I am not respected. I feel really sorry for the Mexican students in that school. I hope that whoever is searching for evidence succeeds. In my opinion I think that the teachers should be fired because they are being racist. I also think that if the teachers are not fired than at least they should get less money. The principal should get better teachers. I think that the president of British Colombia should make a law about rascim. If the president already has than I think that the president should give whoever is being racist a fine of $500 dollars. I have one reason for making a law on racism: my reason is that if the people who are being racist don’t get a punishment than they will keep being racist. The teachers that are dressing up as Mexicans and the wall of trump should get fined a lot of money. This situation is very offensive to me because it makes me feel like the teachers are saying the students in the school are bad and they are also being disrespectful to Mexican cultures. This also offends me because they are also disrespecting americans and their cultures. Just because they are teachers this does not mean they have the right to be racist and disrespectful. Sometimes I notice that some adults seem to be bad role models and I sometimes wonder if some people actually are more immature as they get older ( which is totally not cool)?!?What do you think about this situation???

  15. reilly2 says:

I feel like the teachers that dressed up as Mexicans is very offensive because they are insulting the Mexican by dressing up like not most Mexicans would dress up normally. I did not think they did not mean to insult Mexicans but I think it was just for fun.I really think they should have known better because there were Mexican kids in the school. If the teacher did not know there were Mexican kids know they know and there family members should have been very offended. This would have offended me a lot because that is making fun of our culture. If I was the principal of this school I would teach the children about racism and I would fire the teachers. Also if I was a teacher that dress up as a Mexican I would have got fired and deserved it and not protest if it was not fair. The bad thing about this is the teachers spread it to facebook with got more attention. If the teachers did not expose it to the internet it would still be bad because it is racist. since these people are teachers I think they are being a bad role models for kids. Also because kids might think this is cool so they will dress up as that. I also think the teachers could have prevented this by not dressing up as Mexican people. Another the teachers could’ve prevented it is by not thinking about being that costume. Another thing is the kids that were Mexican would probably not know that it was bad because they were young. If I was one of those kids I would feel bad for my culture and it would be like if they were Chinese dressing up in a dress and making fun of the costume. If I dressed up as a person like a Mexican and made fun of the culture I would probably go to the office and have a talk on racism. If the people were not teachers it would be less offensive but if they were doing it in front of Mexican people that would be very offensive. If the teachers were going trick or treat with there kids and the kids that’d the same costume would get a lot of hate for something he did not do. I truly think that these adult really should have knew better than dressing up as Mexicans

The word “Mexico” is a derivative of Mexica (pronounced “Me-shee-ka”).What today is Mexico City was the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan.Mexico was a site of several advanced Amerindian civilizations – including the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec. The Mayans and Aztecs (nomadic people indigenous to Mexico: existed between 12th and 15th century) resided in Mexico some 13,000 years ago. The Aztecs sacrificed about 250,000 people, or about 1% of their population, each year. They did this to please their gods. I think that the elementary teachers should be fired for what they did because there are Mexican kids in their school and they just dress up as Mexicans and start to make fun of their culture. The Mexican kids in the school might even start getting bullied because of what the teachers did and even if the kids were not Mexican and were another culture and the teachers dressed up as that culture the kids would still feel really offended because the teachers are making fun of their culture and they are at school. If they were at an office it wouldn’t be that bad because usually some adults aren’t as sensitive as kids so maybe the adults can handle it. At an elementary school is not okay and neither is going to houses at Halloween that has a Mexican living there and dressing up as Trump shouting lets make America great again by building this stupid useless wall that the Mexicans have to pay for. Well at least the Mexicans don’t have to pay for the stupid useless wall and yes I am going to keep on calling it a stupid useless wall unless it somehow gets destroyed. The elementary teachers can happily dress up as things in their houses and not post anything and make it go viral. What I mean is the teachers can just privately dress up as things at their house and just make it private. If I was a Mexican I would either feel super left out or I’d want to punch one of the teachers in the face and very hopefully cause a nosebleed or knock one or two teeth off or just make them go to the hospital and not be able to celebrate Halloween. That would make me feel much better if I was a Mexican. If I was a Mexican looking at them making fun of my culture would be way worse than watching finding Dory or finding Nemo.

I think they did not know that they did something very, very wrong. Maybe they knew, but they choose to do it. Why do the stores even sell these insulted cloths and they even get a profit of selling this things. If I was Mexican there would be some world wars again a lot of them and actually get very mad. I would not feel like I belong here and of course they are going to get mad and sad and other stuff like that. These are people that should also feel the feeling of these offended people. Not just Mexicans others too like Japanese and others that I do not know. Ms. Panesar is better than these mockers and these bad teachers that mimic the cultural people. I feel sad for the mimicked people and they will probably kill them when they have the chance. The teachers are the role models for the children at the school and they should be fired and fined for doing this big mistake. We are looking up to them, but one big, big mistake they made will ruin them all. Teachers at that school are supposed to be the role models for everyone. They made one major mistake dressing up as someone else. Teachers are supposed to teach respect and not make fun of people or mimic people. How will we learn to respect if the teachers do not respect others? Not only to the teachers at that school, but also to all the people who live on earth. Instead of making fun of this, we should make this as learning thing. We could from learn these clothes including the culture of different countries. We will learn to respect and give value to people and in return they will value our culture. The clothes that are offensive should be banned in Halloween stores and should only be used properly. We should use these clothes in events or programs as presentation of each country. By doing this we show respect to the country representing the clothes.

Hi today I’ll be talking about how people dress in Halloween and if it ‘s offensive/ racist or not.

First, honestly I just want to say to all those people that were wearing cultural dresses or tucksitos like Mexicans, Arabians, or even Indians and that is really offensive, but most people wear Mexican costumes on Halloween but still that is really offensive, rude, racist, and disrespectful to others too. Lets say that I was Mexican and people wore Mexican costumes for Halloween at school. I would be really offended and sad by that because my country, culture, and tradition is important and I have to respect that. That’s just if I were Mexican, but in the real world I’m actually Bosnian and if someone had did that, I would extremely be offended, depressed, hurtful, and judgmental by that, and as I said my country is REALLY important to me and I have to respect my culture and tradition. Anyway, I’m in Bosnian dance class. It is very important to me because I started to dance since I was 4 years old. Our uniforms would be similar to the Arabians belly dance uniforms but our tops are white, but than again, if someone wore that for school for Halloween, I would be SO offended. Also, when those teachers in Idaho were wearing some American uniforms/ costumes and they made walls and sticked it on them which was very judgmental. Do you know what that means? I’ll tell you what it means. It means that when Donald Trump said that Mexico is not great and they’re so, how should I say it? Oh! blahhh, and that was really harsh and offensive when he said that and those Mexicans must have felt hurtful and offended and I feel so bad for them for what Donald Trump had said. Anyway, so Donald Trump wanted to make a wall in front of Mexico so the Mexicans and the Mexican president won’t come or board to United States, and he was asked ” Who is going to pay for the walls, I mean it is going to take a long time to build it”. And guess what he said ” Oh, the Mexican president can pay for it”. I mean, wow! If Canada was on top of Mexico, Justin Trudeau would let the Mexicans to come/ board to Canada if they want to. But seriously, why would the Mexican president pay for it so his people wont go there to the US.

In conclusion, just remember that don’t wear cultural costumes for Halloween because that is offensive and offensive to others too. Even if you are wearing it for an hour, people won’t even talk to you. It is very affected when you are wearing something, think before you do, that is the moral.

I think that its insulting to dress up as traditional mexican clothes or any others because its insulting and rude if i was mexican i would get insulted as well because i feel like no one likes me and other and no one likes any other mexican. Thats why i hate trump i know there are a few good things but mostly bad because he is crazy and you know he built a wall from mexico. Some teachers often insult mexican people. its rude to dress up like that on halloween because thats not what halloween was fo its for dressing up to look evil so the evil spirits wouldn’t haut them. (no offence) it looks goofy to look like that on halloween because idk it just is. i’d really feel horrible if i was dressed like that on halloween i’d fell pretty embarrassed. i hate to say but i dont like mexican people as well because their drug dealers and any other bad things. I know its insulting to say that because ummm… it feels bad and rude you know. ugh i cant tell no more!! im so tired.i feel very bad for Mexicans because some schools in usa treat Mexicans worst than people that are Canadian and any others. Some bus services were allowed to not let a mexican person sit they can only stand!! Thats totally pure unfair and rude. Some schools even wack mexican children for little mistakes like dropping their pizza on the floor and no Canadians got wacked. Its unfair because its bad and like racist and i wanted to have peace and world peace but theres not if we can stop this then we can change the world! 2 unfair its unfair because its like bad to talk about stuff related to their culture you know what i mean. one guy even got arrested for standing up and said ”this is so wrong!! its not fair” and so he got arrested. even some kids got punished by their teachers and their parents couldent do any thing but to leave this school. so they did and the whole process goes again…

I think that they have made a big mistake. I am pretty sure they know that it is wrong because they are teachers and they should be teaching kids to not do those thing but they still do it and that could offend the students. If I was Mexican I would of feel like the teachers don’t like me as a Mexican at the school. I would feel offended because as I said in the beginning it is like they teachers don’t like me as a Mexican at the school. Since they are teachers It dose not mean that they could do this. Teachers should know this unless they never learned it. I mean they are teachers they know they could get fired. Why would they risk getting fired? If the student that is Mexican tell their parents, they could be very upset right? Why do the teachers risk so many things? In my opinion it is like the teachers don’t even care if these things happen.Teachers should set examples for the children. Not making fun of the mexican people. They should not treat people diffrently because their colour or race.We all should treat people eqealy. We all should live in harmony. After all we share the same earth. The teachers should value peoples lives
regardless were they are from. If I was a teacher I would make sure that I am more sensitive to other peoples religon. That altimately will afect how young people will think. Over all I kinda thing the teachers did this with out thinking.

I think they made a really big mistake of pretending to be Mexicans .They should have known better not to do that and why not to do that. After all they are still teachers they should respect everyone cause they are still people. It probably hurt lots of peoples feelings and they probably they didn’t like it at all. I feel like they don’t know what they are doing ,by the way that is just offensive .I think ten year old knows better then that. I feel ashamed for them . By the way the wall doesn’t look real it just looks like a big bunch of weird looking bricks. I hope if one of them sees this post they can recognize what they did wrong and learn from their mistakes. Like ,what are they thinking at that moment its just rude to do that. They shouldn’t be doing that cause what if one of the teachers student was a Mexican that person would feel left out .

I would feel bad for my culture if I was a Mexican. Yes it would have offended me. No it wouldn’t have changed my opinion at all just because they are teachers. If I were a Mexican I would feel sorta mad and left out. Also I would feel that people don’t respect me .Also that they don’t care who I am and like I was invisible. I would feel like I was in the rain alone in a rainy day with out a umbrella and rain coat and getting soaked. Or I would feel like getting hit by a doge ball in the stomach. Also I would feel like what do they think their doing? I would have felt that the world would be more peaceful if everyone respected each other. I hope it wont happen in the future. 🙁

I think that what these teachers did was not responsible. they are suppose to be leaders. how do they think that the Mexico students are going to feel? they are not good role models. Trump is the one who started the hole thing. how could some be so racist? what was on there mind? how would they feel if they had a Mexico back round? I wonder if they have any empathy for students? they did not make a small mistake they mad a big influence on the society. This is just a little bit of my perspective and questions on this topic if you want to know some more than keep on reading.

the teachers at this school made a BIG mistake in their Halloween costume’s. as you can probably tell they did some thing vary hurtful to the Mexico kids at this school. honestly when i went to mexico city and la Manzanillo and the people their were so nice. one resonant stared over time and let us eat their. and trump still thinks they are bad so what if some of them came to “his country” elegy they just can not take it any more some kids are getting taken from their parents because of him. Halloween is suppose to be fun. Not being made fun of.

how would you feel if your country or city was made fun of by your teacher. i would feel so left out . what about you? leave a comment and you tell me.

And on Facebook I saw staff members or teachers from the same school dressed up as the wall trump was about to build, that’s wrong. Those were being so racist to the Mexicans. And I also think that the teacher working in that elementary should fire for sure. In that Facebook picture some people even dressed up as the Statue Of Liberty and other character that represent America. And on the costume it said, “Make America Great Again.” But I don’t see how Donald Trump is making America great again, by the look he is just making worst again. And the people who are dressing up as the wall or the Mexican are both smiling about their costume, they just don’t understand. And they the bad part was they post on their Facebook, but the good new is it got deleted on their Facebook page. And my question for you today is. How would you feel if somebody dressed up as your culture or religion and making fun of it like dancing around, smiling about it, and even laughing about it. Hope you guys today enjoy the topic about how staff member or teachers at elementary school and made fun of the Mexican culture and religion.

In the pictures that Ms. Panesar posted there were elementary school teachers dressed up as stereotypical Mexicans witch I thought was not ok but then someone said something about freedom of speech and that changed my point of view.
There were also teachers from the same school that each dressed up as something American and in that group each teacher was part of the wall that Donald Trump was planning to build and it had the words “MAKE AMERACA GREAT AGAIN” on it.
Which kind of implies that they support Trump but on the other hand they could be making fun of him.
I also kind of see a theme it could be that the wall with America on one side and Mexico on the other and they just weren’t thinking.
I would almost definitely be insulted if my ethnicity was Mexican because when I was looking for other examples (which you will see later) I saw a picture of someone dressed up as a huge fat hula dancer, and in case you didn’t know I am a 16th Hawaiian and my mom does hula and we both find insulting and hurtful (me more than her).

I don’t exactly have a strong opinion so here are some supporting and arguing points for each side.
First I do find it racist that they dressed up like that because that is not what they wear in Mexico today and is a stereotype.
The mustaches are a huge stereotype because not all people in Mexico grow huge mustaches and not all people there have black hair.
There was a person dressed up as a piñata which went from being a traditional thing to more of a commercial thing like Halloween or Christmas. Piñatas are usually used for celebrations like birthday party and they could be from Italy, China, Spain others or a whole bunch of places (look it up).
` On the other hand, there is a thing called freedom of speech which is where there are certain laws to protect what people can say, and since this was in Mississippi the American laws of freedom of speech say this is not against the law, yet it is racist.

Here are those examples of pictures I talked about earlier:
One is a “Mountie” costume. In most parts of Canada there aren’t any Mounties. No matter how hard you look down here in the Vancouver area there is like a 5 in 50 chance that you will find one in a red uniform. They mostly wear regular police outfits.
This is another stereotypical Canadian photo of someone in red and black plaid pajamas and a fur hat and as you should all know by now this is not what we wear on a daily basses. Sure we may wear P.J’s like this every once and a while but that does not mean that we wear this 24/7. If you go to an American sleep over you may see your friends/ family wearing these pajamas.
This one is a box of Timbits. Timbits are something that people think us Canadians love to eat in our red and black pajamas while we chug maple syrup. Once again not true.
I don’t even think that I have say anything

*Teacher*- a person who teaches, especially in a school. That is the google definition for the word teacher, here is my defenition- *Teacher*- A person who teaches and guides the ones they teach and influences their thinking and understanding of things. These teachers have displayed none of these definitions. They have been really disrespectful to the people who are from a Mexican background. Not only is this act racist, but it completely inappropriate for a teacher. Teachers are examples to children, they influnce there thinking and children will follow them because a teacher is meant to know better than them. Also even if they may agree with Trump’s “thinking”, they have absolutely no right to express that in a teaching enviroment. You could possibly call this abbuse of power or authority. Also Trump is extremely wrong about the Mexican’s. Another argument you could have is that, having a Mexican or other culture themed party also offensive. Well what is cultural appropriation? And is dressing up and eating their traditional food for a party part of cultural appropriation? So, dressing up and eating a cultures traditional food for a party is not offensive becuase you are celebrating them and enjoying their style or traditions, however, then you might ask how is dressing up as Mexicans on Halloween offensive? Well, we know that Halloween is meant to be scary, so you are essentially saying that Mexicans are scary, and also there is that bias that all Mexicans are drug dealers and thieves. Anyway, Some of you may say that am I not being a hypocrite as I was wearing a Greek goddess costume for Halloween? How about you answer that. Now, I think the Mexican people at the school, well anywhere over the world seeing as they posted it on Facebook (How Genius!) felt about it? I would be greatly offended if I were Mexican and I am pretty sure they also felt pretty offended. And imagine being Mexican and being hurt about this whole Mexican/American border situation and then seeing your teacher dress up as the wall Trump plans to build with the words “make America great again”? Many of the Mexican children have also been taken away from there parents because of that wall and now that Trump (or the orange-haired monster, as I like to call him!) has a belief that Mexicans are smuggling drugs annd other stuff. I think teachers should behave better than this and I don’t think this was an innocent mistake. Also it is one thing for a normal citizen to something like this, but a teacher as I said before is meant to set an example for children.
Anyway if you want to know more about cultural appropriation then visit this website- http://www.theweek.co.uk/cultural-appropriation
I hope you enjoyed and learnt more about this.
