Sexism in Sports: Cam Newton

On October 4th, 2017, Carolina Panther’s quarterback, Cam Newton made eyebrows, yes even unibrows, stand up with his comment made to Jourdan Rodrigue, a reporter with the Charlotte Observer. Rodrigue asked Newton about a simple question about wide receiver Devin Funchess’s route-running. He grinned. Not a nice one either. Then he said, in a slow condescending tone: “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes. It’s funny.” Rodrique fired back on Twitter and said, “I don’t think it’s ‘funny’ to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.” In fact, she chose not to write Newton’s comments after the press conference because “it was worse.” 

 It took Newton roughly a day to apologise. 

He even said later, “My sarcasm, trying to give someone a compliment turned in ways I never would’ve even imagined.” Does that sound like he’s telling the truth or?

Oikos Yogourt said that they would not be working with Newton and will not be sponsoring anymore. Also, the NFL released a statement saying that his comment was “wrong and disrespectful”

Now you be the judge. What do you think about what Newton said? Was he telling the truth that it was just sarcasm? Was it just a mistake and he did not mean it?

    OMG, Cam Newton was SO RUUUUDE. I TOTALLY agree with Oikos Yogourt. What Newton was “wrong and disrespectful,” but I think he WAS trying to be sarcastic. I bet he must had a bit of kindness in his heart, because I don’t think he would be that mean, and well… stupid. Mr. Newton, if you are reading this, NOT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR AND YOUR SARCASAM. PEOPLE THINK IT IS RUDE, OKAY?

    I heard about it on the radio a week ago, but its nice to know it again about this terrible incident. I remember on the radio how when they were explaining that cam doesn’t like racism. but with sexism he’s oh oh pick me I’m so stupid that’s why pick me only me. yup cam is that dam stupid, cam your a pro football player not a 5 year old brat. so cam newton my comment for you is stop being a baby and start living a life. if you have one, comment if you think cam just got roasted. I hope cam actually goes up to Rodrique and fully apologise to her. I honestly think cam was being sarcastic only because he knows that someone will believe his dirty lie.

    Newton’s remark is like, wow, boi, I do not know what exactly he meant about routes, but seriously? If you want to keep a sponsor, just play it safe and DO NOT SAY A COMMENT LIKE THAT. Simple. Plus, it’s really even if he did not mean it, you probably should say what you really mean, not putting it on a sexist sentence people take the wrong way. NFL called his comment “wrong and disrespectful”
    Well, I agree, but my morals are making me feel bad for him, that is the weird thing. But It’s easy to see why Oikos yogurt cut ties with him, especially when he said it with a “slow and condescending tone.”
    I’m pretty sure the fastest way to (maybe) fix it is by when you said that, you should say “not to be sexist or anything”.The thing is, I definitely agree with the NFL and the reporter. But all the ridicule is making me feel bad for him, but only if he was not trying to be sexist. Although I think he deserves it.
    The reporter, it must feel bad for being the victim of that comment. It must be embarrassing, at least in my eyes. That’s all can I say.

    One little tiny mistake, that ruined his own life, if he did it more sexist, maybe he would get kicked out of his team and be a hobo his whole life, that’s why you don’t mess with people, but there’s still people that can understand him, like, if you were Cam Newton, you will be in a panic after that incident, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.     I’m pretty sure he didn’t mean it, but that compliment was so mean. Also what’s so funny about a woman talk about routes?!!? Wow, talk about sexism. Cam probably said that to be funny. Maybe he just offended Jourdan, that’s why she chose to not write Newton’s comments. Besides, she is a reporter. I can’t believe the whole NFL said that Newton’s comment was so disrespectful. He should have made a better apology.

I think that Cam newton said it was just sarcasm because he didn’t wan to to lose his job, so he used a excuse. women have the rights to talk about football not just men can.We all have the rights to do things not just men can.Cam newton should of known better than saying a sexist comment. even i know better not to say sexist things. I think it should’ve took Cam Newton at least 15 minutes to apologise. But the reporter shouldn’t be racist and call him n ***.But none of this would happen if he didn’t say sexists comments to women. I think this situation has several morals in it. And a couple of the morals are think before you speak and apologise right away don`t wait 2 days to apologise. I hope Cam newton learned a good lesson from this. This might help him for the future.
