We are officially moving into Business Fair season and all the students are so excited. And wow, do they ever have amazing ideas! Business Fair will be on May 1st 🙂

For those who have never done business fair, it is essentially when students create a product and sell it to their peers and parents! This year we split our fair up into two events, in December we did grades 6-7 and in May we will be doing grade 5-6 (us!). For this assignment it will be a mix of language arts, ADST, art, career education, and math!

Here is a quick breakdown of business fair:

Anything with a * are steps we have completed or are currently working on.

-*Students will brainstorm ideas and pick one! Products must be made by the students.

-*The students will create a supply list, with an approximate cost, as well as where to buy the items. During class they researched where to buy certain supplies, as well as the cost in order to see if their idea was realistic. A supply list that totalled $50 or less was approved. I did let the students know that of course if they can find supplies for cheaper elsewhere than where they researched, then to of course go ahead and buy the cheaper option. Along with a supply list, the students had to do a drawing prototype in order to demonstrate what the item might look like.

-*Once the supply list and drawing prototype is approved, the students can shop for supplies and make me a model prototype. They have a checklist they must complete while making their items.

-Vendors (parents/students piggy bank) will purchase supplies. All receipts are given to Ms. P and will be put in the student’s money pouches and will be kept at school. Receipts are going to help us figure out the product price point, as well as how much to pay back the vendors once business fair is done. Students need these receipts in order to do their calculations. If a receipt cannot be given to me, then a paper with the price is fine too!

-Once a model prototype is done, they will conduct market research to ensure any revisions needed, are made!

-Once market research is done, students are free to start mass production! While they do this at home, at school they will be making posters.

-Approximately a week before business fair I will ask all students to bring their float money to school. This will also be funded by parents/student piggy banks. The float money is $20 per group and must be in change (coins). Float money is so students can operate as a business the day of and give change to their customers. If all goes well, float money should remain at $20 and be returned back to you or their piggy banks in full!

-Once business fair is done, this is the calculation we will follow.

Total amount made – supply cost (to pay back vendors) – 20% for a donation to a charity = amount students get to keep!

Some extra notes:

-While most of the project will be done at school, there is a very important piece that must be done at home. Making the products! Students are required to make the products on their own time and coordinate with any partners on their own time outside of school as well. In school we will be working on the design process, market research, posters, logos, advertisements and designing their stands for the day of. Along with this, students are responsible to purchase any supplies they will be using, along with the $20 float which is used the day off in order to create change for customers.

-It is VERY important that students act as if they are paying back their vendors. I recognize that some parents may allow their child to keep all the money, but for the purpose of the project they must act like a real business.

*It is important to note that if your child is working in a partnership, they are responsible to figure out how they will split the cost for supplies and the float money. *

*It is also important to note that donating to charity is non-negotiable and the charity chosen will be disclosed closer to the date! We vote on it together!*

Business fair is a very fun way for students to get create and learn real-life lessons! I recognize that this is a new project for many this year so please reach out if there are any confusions or questions! You are also more than welcome to take a peak in your child’s business fair booklet as well. Along with this, any guidance, wisdom, or advice you can give to your child in regard to their product is much appreciated!

Along with this, parents ARE allowed to come purchase items and be a part of business fair! There will be parent hours and the time will be sent out via email from Aubrey closer to the date.

Some due dates are below, but I will update due dates as we continue on the ‘planner messages’ tab on the blog.

Here is a quick overview of the Business Fair due dates we have so far:

–Supply list and cost due tomorrow

-Model prototype due Feb 20th

Thank you!

Ms. P

Hi everyone!
