What are we learning?

Below you can find the learning objectives for Term 3.

Here you can find a quick snapshot into what we are learning in each subject. If you require further details please feel free to email me.

Language Arts:

-Writing:  We are currently working on speeches! Each student has picked a topic and are beginning to start drafting out their ideas. They will also be presenting their speeches to the class so they can further practice their oral language skills.

After speeches, we will be working on poetry and writing another essay.

-Grammar: We have learned many grammar rules this year, and the current goal is to apply them consistently in classwork.

-Reading: Reading this term will be integrated into many different units this term. For example, Heritage Fair. Students will be expected to practice reading strategies and comprehension skills taught throughout the year.

My Language Arts program contains very explicit teaching where I will show the students exactly what to do and how to do it. Which is then followed by application-based learning where they will be assessed by their ability to apply their knowledge to different assignments. I always try to have an equal split of reading and writing throughout the year, but of course there may be some time periods where we may focus more heavily on one over the other. I also try to bring as much Language Arts into other subjects as I can through research projects or reading non-fiction texts in science and social studies.

-I suggest having your child read for at least 30 minutes a night. Before bed is a great time to do this! along with this, I suggest having your child write in a journal everyday for 10-15 minutes. They can write about their day, a quick story, or you can give them a funny topic to write about. Writing at home can help reinforce what they learn at school, as well as increase their writing stamina!

Math:

-Units covered: Place value to billions, multiplication, division, fractions, ratios & percents.

-We are currently learning about geometry.

-I encourage all students to review their multiplication and division facts at home in order to help with speed and accuracy. Multiplication and division are often foundational units that we see across all math units. Having a strong grasp of these number sense concepts can greatly improve your child’s confidence and success in all math areas..

Science:

We have started space! After this, we will learn about body systems.

Health:

We have been discussing peer pressure. After this, we will be touching on healthy eating and habits.

Social Studies:

This term we are going to start working on Heritage Fair. Students must pick a topic they are interested in and it must be connected to Canada in some way!

Career Ed:

Students will continue practicing their self-assessment skills by reviewing their work habits and goals throughout the term. Along with this, students will have opportunities to show leadership ability and practice these within our group work and little buddy activities.

This term we are going to focus on employability skills, sending professional emails and doing a career research project.

ADST:

This term students have been working really hard on Business Fair! Along with this, they have done an amazing job using online tools in class such as Canva and Word doc. We are going to be working on a “Not a Box” project next.

Art:

We are done sculpting and will be moving into zendoodles.

French:

If you have any questions about what your child is learning, please let me know and I will reach out to their French teacher for you.
