Hello!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hello grade 3’s! I hope your week back at virtual school is going well. We miss your smiling faces very much! You must miss each other too. I know my little 4 year old son misses his buddies at daycare like crazy!<\/p>\n

Did you have fun reviewing and\/ or learning how to sing \u201cLa, Sol and Mi\u201d with the hand signs?<\/p>\n

The video of Bobby McFerrin was pretty neat heh? He’s the same guy who sang the famous song \u201cDon’t worry, be happy\u201d- I’ll post that one too below in case you’re curious.<\/p>\n

Anyways, the reason why the whole audience could follow along with him in the video is because he taught them a great way to improvise<\/b><\/i> using the \u201cpentatonic\u201d scale. Improvising<\/b><\/i> is another word for doing something without a concrete plan, and we do it all <\/i>the time in music, it’s so much fun.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is \u201cpentatonic\u201d?<\/b><\/p>\n

What do you think pentatonic means? Do you recognize anything in that word? What about penta?<\/p>\n

Here’s a hint… these shape names tell you how many sides they have:<\/p>\n

Pentagon-5 (\u201cpenta\u201d means 5, octagon-8 (\u201cocta\u201dmeans 8) or hexagon-6 (\u201chexa\u201d means 6)<\/p>\n

Did you ever wonder why an octo<\/i>pus is named and octo-<\/b>pus, right 8 tentacles!<\/p>\n

Ahh…look how many connections you can make when you think about language!!<\/p>\n

So a pentatonic scale<\/strong>, is a scale with only 5 notes!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Do you see how he teaches the audience 5 notes. He uses his body to jump in the spaces like we would on a piano. When he goes to (our) right he goes higher in pitch, when he goes to (our) left, he goes lower in pitch. (He is starting on the middle DO).<\/p>\n

How are you all doing? Things have sure changed in all of our daily lives haven’t they, but it’s nice when some things can stay the same. If you were in Ms. Hesketh’s class you will remember the little songs we sung together like \u201cEscargot, escargot, jusqu’au ligne rouge, escargot, escargot jusqu’\u00e0 la porte\u201d, or \u201cDoggie, doggie\u201d? Those songs are using La Sol and Mi. We are going to start writing our own <\/i>songs using La Sol and Mi in the next lessons, but first let’s review and practice!<\/p>\n

For fun: <\/span>Here is a cool video of the amazing Bobby McFerrin getting everyone to sing together. We’ll talk about this more later, but check it out and see if you can join with the audience here<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n
