Did you have fun dancing in 3\/4 time? Did you feel the \u201cdown..up..up\u201d of the music?<\/p>\n<p>Did you notice that it was more obvious in some songs than others?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What is 3\/4 time again?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>When we say 3\/4 time or 4\/4 time we are talking about the <b>\u201cmetre\u201d <\/b>of the music. The metre is basically the measurement of groups of beats into musical bars (not to be confused with chocolate bars;) You can hear a pattern because the first beat of the group- or bar- is stronger or accented a little bit.<\/p>\n<p>**Fun fact: The first beat in the group of beats is <i><b>actually called <\/b><\/i>the down beat, just like how we felt the \u201cdown&#8230;up&#8230;up\u201d in the music! In the video link below, the teacher also refers to the first beat of each bar as the \u201cstrong beat\u201d or the \u201caccented\u201d beat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>So how do we <i>show <\/i>3\/4 time in written music?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>To show what metre the music is in we need..<\/p>\n<p><b>1: A time signature:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.24.21-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-395\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.24.21-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"85\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A time signature has 2 numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The one on top shows the <b>number of beats<\/b> per bar (in this case it is 3 beats per bar), and the one on the bottom show what <b>kind of note<\/b> the rhythm is in.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the bottom number will be 4 (which means a quarter note) but we&#8217;ll talk more about this later.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2: B<\/strong><b>ars and bar lines <\/b><\/p>\n<p>We also need to put in &#8220;<strong>bars&#8221; <\/strong>and <strong>&#8220;barlines&#8221;<\/strong> to divide the music into the groups of beats. So if you are in 3\/4 time, you need a bar line every 3 beats .<\/p>\n<p>Bar lines are suuuu-per important. If we didn&#8217;t have them, the music would be really confusing to count.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; Musical<b> \u201cbars\u201d <\/b>are divided by<b> \u201cbar lines\u201d.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Here are 3 bars separated by 2 bar lines with a double bar line at the end (don&#8217;t worry about this one for now, it just means the piece is over):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.28.05-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-396\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.28.05-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.28.05-AM.png 467w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/nordstrandj\/files\/2020\/04\/Screen-Shot-2020-04-18-at-9.28.05-AM-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Actively listening\/ watching<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is a little video explaining it again in another way. If you want to continue watching after 1:30, please do, but don&#8217;t worry if it what he says afterwards doesn&#8217;t make sense quite yet- we&#8217;ll learn about it soon!<\/p>\n<p>Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qkuqjrwlkxk\">here <\/a>to watch<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>So in the songs from last week you heard a pattern of beats: 1..2..3, 1..2..3 over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>The pattern is divided by \u201c<b>bar lines\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n<p>The bar lines separate the \u201c<b>bars\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The \u201c<b>metre\u201d<\/b> is written at the beginning like this below and tells you the number of beats in each group. The number of beats in the group doesn&#8217;t change unless the metre says so. Here we have 4\/4 time which is 4 beats per bar instead of 3.<\/p>\n<p>graphic. This is the &#8220;metre&#8221; of the music. If you&#8217;re not sure what it sounds like, think of a dance you might know that goes \u201cdown..up..up\u201d like a waltz. To listen to an example and to check how it is different from 4\/4 time *four four time, (or four beats per bar) listen and watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GJRItpXDizA\"><span style=\"color: #ff3333;\">here\u00a0<\/span><\/a><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Active listening:<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A) Can you hear the \u201cdown..up..up\u201d in the music?
