Summer Reading for Advanced Placement English Students

Summer Reading – English 12 AP

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…

The man who never reads lives only one” – George R. R. Martin

Dear English AP students,

You will save yourself time and stress if you read the following books during the summer as opposed to during the school year.  Find yourself a good reading spot – I will imagine you all in hammocks, swinging gently in the summer shade!

The Musts –

  • Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
  • The Stranger by Albert Camus
  • Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

…and in addition…

  • Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden
  • The Color Purple by Alice Walker

But please don’t stop there!  Click on the “Great Books” page above for further suggestions for summer reading. There is also a plethora of reading lists on the internet.  For example, the Modern Library’s Top 100 which focuses on American Literature, The Guardian’s Top 100 which focuses on British Literature, and the CBC’s Top 100 Canadian novels. Those of you who intend to write the AP exam need to read deep and wide! Challenge yourself with a classic or a genre you’ve never explored before…

Your mind will thank you.
