Gingerbread Blog – Kindergartens are making GB dough!

Today the children were very excited!  At the end of last week they decided that they really must taste some Gingerbread so they are going to make some Gingerbread dough and then bake their own Gingerbread Man. They keep saying “YUM, YUM.”I really feel badly for the poor fellow they are about to make. I must say the day was rather unsettling for me. You should have heard them as they made their dough…. “I want the head!”, “I want an arm.” It really was quite horrible. Don’t they know we have feelings?? They are making their Gingerbread Man tomorrow. I must think of a plan…

Gingerbread Blog by the Gingerbread Man

gingerbread-runs

Hi! I’ve just popped by from Gingerbread Land and I thought I’d tell you what I’ve seen happening at South Slope. The Kindergarten children have been listening to many variations of my story! Oh my, this sends shivers up my spine! They are loving comparing and contrasting the different tales — you should ask them to tell you about all the people and animals that have tried to eat me. They have discovered that the fox is often the trickster (man ‘o man, I wish I had known that earlier!!) and that some of my fellow Gingerbread Boys talk a lot more than others! I’ve quite enjoyed listening to the children help Ms. Lawder read the books — they all chime in as she is reading and there is a chorus of “run, run as fast as you can. You can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread Man!”

Several children have been so taken with my story that they have headed to the reading chair during Centres and spent their time re-telling the story in a very animated fashion. Others have borrowed a copy of the book and illustrated and written their own Gingerbread tale. I think I’ll keep watching to see what they do next!

Daily 5 Literacy Stations

All of the Kindergarten students get together 3 times a week for Daily 5.  During this time we have been sharing stories and Alphabet books as well as building our reading ‘stamina’ as we read books to ourselves.  We have learned that there are three different ways that we can read a book:

  • Read and talk about the pictures
  • Read the words
  • Retell a previously read book

This week we were very excited to begin our Daily 5 Stations.  Our current stations are:

  • Working on Writing (with whiteboards)
  • Listen to Reading (using a storybook app on the iPads)
  • Cookie Sheet Alphabet Work (with Magnet letters)
  • Read to Self
  • Alphabet Printing Work

Have a look at this short video of us hard at work this morning!

Pajama Day & Drop everything and read! Drop Everything and Read!

We rolled out of bed and came to school in our Pajamas on Monday!!  So much fun!!  It was tempting to take naps all day but, we had so much work to do there was just no time for that.  In the afternoon the whole school Dropped Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.). Our class went to the library and joined Ms. Shuster, Ms Keilty and Mrs Fraser’s classes to read books.

A.S.L. Story with Sergei!

We were very lucky to have one of our class parents join us to teach us some A.S.L. (American Sign Language) on Friday morning!  Sergei used an ABC book to teach us the letters of the alphabet and the signs for lots of different animals.  He has offered to continue teaching & sharing with us each week!  Stay tuned for more information on this.
On this Thanksgiving weekend, I am so very thankful for my wonderful class and an amazing group of parents!  This is going to be a wornderul year!

Terry Fox Run

We practiced all week and were all very excited to participate in our first Terry Fox Run!!  I have made a short video of our class pre & post run.  I was too busy running and cheering to take action shots during the actual run.
