Hi everyone,

We are going on our first walking trip to Burnaby Mountain tomorrow!
Please ensure students have lots of layers. While it will be dry tomorrow, it may be cool in the fog. I suspect we’ll be above the fog once we arrive at the top, but it may still be chilly. We will be leaving at 9:15 and should arrive back at Aubrey just before 3pm.
A few notes about the trip:

• Students may bring a few $ as we walk by a Chevron convenience store on the way back and often enjoy getting a snack.
• I showed students an app called iNaturalist which allows us to do a fun learning activity on the mountain. I can tether my data for this app and if you’re comfortable, please send your child with their phone if they have one. If not, no worries! Students partner with those who have one.
• In case of emergency, please call the school and they will contact me asap.

Also, this is just a reminder to bring a small plastic container for our soapstone carving on Friday (think Margarine container sized). We’ve only got two so far!

Approx route for our walk up the mountain:

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we start the day with our first Young People’s Concert even. Please ensure students arrive on-time as we need to load the bus by 9:05! I’ll open the class doors at 8:50 tomorrow to get everyone settled in for attendance. We should return back to school shortly after 11am in time for hot lunch.

Also, I have asked students to bring in a clean plastic container for soapstone carving next Friday Dec 1st. This can be similar in size to a margarine container. It can also be a reusable tupperware container. We’re doing some soapstone carving and the soapstone will sit in water in these containers to help with the carving. They should return undamaged but this is our first time trying it out!

December 1st also happens to be our last day with our student teacher Mr. Lee! He has been a great help to our class and we’ll miss him as he leaves to join the district as a TTOC!

We had an excellent trip to Beaty and the PME today! Thank you to parents for ensuring everyone was on time and in good spirits. We had great weather and saw lots of cool things in the museums. We could easily spend hours in each one surrounded by lots of knowledgeable people guiding us through activities. I have attached a few pictures below.

Upcoming: Report cards go home early December.
Our grad hoodie order is still waiting on a few students from other divisions to make payment but I’m hoping to submit the order by the end of the week.
Velodrome: I’m still waiting on our contact at the velodrome to confirm but we’re looking at a mid-January visit.
Our student teacher’s (Mr Lee) last day with us is December 1st as he is graduating soon!
Grade 7 camp – We’re looking at camp for June 10-12 (two nights). The cost should be in the mid-$300 range including bus, ferry, and everything at camp. This is just a heads up for those planning ahead.
Volleyball – This week marks the end of our regular season for the volleyball team. There will be a casual tournament playdate coming up next week (Nov 21st) for those on the team.

Our class helped set up the pumpkin patch for younger grades yesterday and helped them find and carry the perfect pumpkin!

It was a great day and the warm, moist weather didn’t put a damper on our trip. We had a last minute change with bus routes which involved a longer walk but the students handled it well.

This is just a reminder for Thursday this week that we are leaving Aubrey early. Please ensure students arrive at school by 8:35am so we can take the bus shortly after.

Unfortunately, it looks like we’ve got rain in the forecast for Thursday. There is a short (45 minute) classroom session on site, but we will primarily spend the day outside. Please make sure everyone brings appropriate clothing for rain and dirt trails. The trip proceeds rain or shine so we’ll make the best of it! I’ll post some photos here after the trip.

Hello Div 1 parents,

This is just a reminder about our ‘Parents as Partners’ meeting this Wednesday. If you are able to attend, our student teacher and I will be available to answer questions you may have and to give an outline on our upcoming school year as well as showing how to track your child’s progress.
Also, I will be asking parents about parent drivers for two upcoming field trips. If you are not able to attend on Wednesday but may still be able to drive please let your child know and I’ll poll them on Thursday!
Trip 1: Thursday October 19, 2023 to Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre (full day)
Trip 2: Tuesday November 14, 2023 to Beaty Museum & PME at UBC

Once I am able to see how many drivers we have I will let parents know. If we don’t have enough drivers then we will take public transportation and likely need to leave before our normal 9am start time.

Welcome to division 1!

Friday I gave students a welcome sheet to bring home to parents where I outline some information on the start to our school year. Please keep in mind the following dates: Friday Sept 22 for our Terry Fox Run
Monday Sept 25 is a ProD day
Thurs Sept 28 is a day where we can meet in the classroom between 3 and 5pm
