We lucked out on a beautiful day! I’m happy everyone had a great time and stayed safe on the slippery steps. I have attached a few photos below, and we’ll post a few more next week.

Hi Parents,

I have attached a couple photos of a painting we completed in class. We focused on shading and gradients of colour.

We should be receiving our fused glass pieces by the end of the week!

Also, I’ll be handing out forms regarding our next hike to Quarry Rock in Deep Cove. Please keep in mind this date may change if the weather is too rainy. I’ve got it tentatively planned for Friday Nov 14. There’s no cost to this trip and we will be taking public transit.

Have a great day!

Hi Division 1 Parents,

Our term is now well underway and we’ve got a few things going on.

Our fused glass expert was popular last year and we had the opportunity to book her again this year. She’ll be coming to our class on October 20th. I wasn’t aware that the school secretary had already put up the payment on School Cash but I have now sent home the parent letter associated with this event.

I have also tentatively scheduled a class hike on the Quarry Rock trail for November 14th. This date will likely change as I check the forecast, but it should be a fun day outside. Stay tuned for updated dates!

Also, we have started reading Project Hail Mary together as a novel study for this term. We are reading together in class and I ask that we don’t encourage students to read ahead on this one. Students have a job to complete every third chapter we read together and it’s tricky when students have all read different amounts. Re-reading, however, is great! Unfortunately our district resource which provided class sets of novels is no longer in operation. I have provided a PDF version of the novel to students, but it isn’t ideal and I’ll look to sourcing these physical books in the future. At least the PDF allows for translation and ctrl-f functions!

Lastly, just a friendly reminder to have your child show you their past and upcoming assignments on Teams and in their binders as a way to keep an eye on how they’re doing this term. Our next parent-teacher meetings are in late November but we can chat any time.

Hi Division 1 Parents,

Our class is doing a walking trip to Burnaby Mountain on Thursday. We’ll start our walk around 9:20 so please ensure everyone is on time. We will return to Aubrey shortly before 3pm.

The weather looks good for Thursday, but students should bring a couple light layers. We’ll also be stopping at Husky on the way back for students who decide to bring a few dollars for a snack. Lastly, we’ll be doing an activity with the Leaf Snap app, so if students have a phone it would be great if they brought it on the walk. Students can work in groups so it’s fine if you child doesn’t have one for Thursday.

The approximate route is shown below, and the school can contact me if you need anything on Thursday.

Thanks!

J Lapierre

Welcome to Division 1 at Aubrey!

We’ve got an exciting year planned out for the students. Please subscribe to receive email notifications on this page as I’ll be primarily using this page to post additional information on field trips and to post photos of our class doing activities. Camp for grade 7s is the big one they look forward to in June. More details will be sent home soon.

I look forward to meeting many of you at next Tuesday’s Parents as Partners meeting from 3-4:30. If you aren’t able to attend that’s fine. We can always chat during pick up and drop off, or send me an email any time!

We aren’t using paper agendas as we primarily use Microsoft Teams for assignments which keeps track of upcoming and overdue assignments for them. Once I familiarize the class with this system I will ask them to show you around so that you may also see their work, feedback, and any issues with late work.

A paper regarding school supplies was sent home on Monday. Each student should bring these items to school and these are all things we will use this year and that can be used in high school as they move up. I have discussed all these items with the class so I’m hoping they will be able to answer some questions you may have about these items.

Regarding laptops, students may bring laptops to school which can only be used during times that all other students are assigned work on computers. If they choose to bring a laptop, they are responsible for treating it gently and storing it safely (I will assist, of course). I am looking into purchasing some class laptops as well so that we can do more involved work with computers throughout the year as we’ve got a limited number of devices at school. It will help if we have a few responsible students bring in their own devices as that reduces the number of laptops I need to acquire. Students have been pretty responsible with these in the past and I expect that to be the case this year as well.

Thanks and I look forward to working with you all,

J Lapierre
