{"id":7588,"date":"2022-01-20T20:33:34","date_gmt":"2022-01-21T04:33:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/ignasv\/?p=7588"},"modified":"2022-01-20T20:49:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-21T04:49:51","slug":"coral-reef-has-been-discovered-in-the-south-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/ignasv\/2022\/01\/20\/coral-reef-has-been-discovered-in-the-south-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"Coral Reef has been discovered in the South Pacific near Tahiti"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/jan\/20\/like-a-work-of-art-rare-stretch-of-pristine-coral-reef-discovered-off-tahiti-age-of-extinction\">A 3 km long coral reef has been discovered in the south pacific off of the coast of Tahiti<\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>A \u201cmagical\u201d coral reef stretching as far as the eye can see has been discovered off the coast of the South Pacific island Tahiti.<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HL-Ziu4yV9k\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Most of the world\u2019s known coral reefs are at depths of 25 metres and above, with many facing the risk of collapse as the world\u2019s oceans continue to heat. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>In September, a study found coral reef coverage had fallen by half since the 1950s because of global heating, overfishing, pollution and habitat destruction.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Speaking to the BBC Prof Murray Roberts, a marine scientist at the University of Edinburgh, said the discovery underscored the need to map similar reefs to make sure they can be protected in the future.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>\u201cWe still associate corals with the shallowest tropical seas but here we find a huge previously unknown coral reef system.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>\u201cAs shallow waters warm faster than the deeper waters we may find these deeper reef systems are refuges for corals in the future.
