Investigate changes of state.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Per Student or Group:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>4-5 ice cubes<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>salt in a salt shaker<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>plate or tray to work on (not paper!)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3><strong>Key Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Why do the ice cubes stop slipping off when you add salt?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3><strong>What To Do<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>1. Try to stack ice cubes into a tower.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2. Try again\u2014but this time let the ice cubes sit out on a plate for 2\u20133 minutes. Then<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>sprinkle lots of salt on the top of each cube before putting the next one on top of it.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h3><strong>Extensions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>Put a piece of string on an ice cube, then sprinkle it with salt. Wait a few moments, then lift the string. The water should melt then re-freeze, sticking the string to the ice cube.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\"
