It means that <strong>separate traits are separately inherited<\/strong>. This is because during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/what-is-meiosis-10163\">meiosis<\/a>the chromosomes line up randomly before the cell divides, allowing for gamete formation.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><strong>Law of Dominance<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/law-of-dominance-10971\">law of dominance<\/a> says that there are dominant and recessive traits. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/dominant-10179\">Dominant<\/a> traits are defined as whichever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/phenotype-10228\">phenotype<\/a> is expressed in an organism that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/heterozygous-vs-homozygous-10433\">heterozygous<\/a> for the trait.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Law of Segregation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/law-of-segregation-10972\">law of segregation<\/a> says that everyone has two versions (called alleles) for each trait\u2014one from each parent\u2014and that these alleles segregate <strong>randomly<\/strong> (see independent assortment) during meiosis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text-content interactive-content-blocks__block\">\n<h4>A Brief Disclaimer:<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget that Mendel&#8217;s laws don&#8217;t always work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mendel studied the results of crossing different traits in pea plants, which show relatively simple inheritance patterns. Luckily for Mendel, he didn&#8217;t have to deal with any funky things like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/incomplete-dominance-10182\">incomplete dominance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/sex-linked-10183\">sex-linked genes<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expii.com\/t\/polygenic-10184\">polygenic traits<\/a> in his pea plants. Although Mendel&#8217;s laws work, they don&#8217;t perfectly apply in all situations.
