Carnaval, Carnaval, Carnaval

Carnival started on January twenty seventh and ended on the thirty first. Bonhomme came in a car this year but everyone thought he would come on the fire truck. Five fire trucks went past, three had the sirens on and the other two just passed by. Everyone was dancing on Arrow street. It was very very loud. Then we went to the gym and there was the opening ceremony. Everyone was screaming and shouting. I couldn’t even hear myself. The next day, even division numbers wereninvited to dance. Sadly I didn’t go.  Thursday we got maple syrup cookies. They were very good. Friday  was closing ceremony day. Bonhomme gave the key back to Marlborough. Carnival was fun! by Aaron

Golf!

On January 24th many other classes and our class had a fun golf lesson.  The two instructors 👨‍🏫 taught us how to do the 5 different positions in golf. We got to see the variety of places to play golf based on skill level. Then the class was divided into two parts, each team got to rotate to different stations. The students and I also got to use different golf clubs and golf balls that were all used for some different purposes. I’m very happy 😆 that I got to learn all about golf 🏌️, I always had an interest for learning more about this cool unique sport. I hope I can learn and explore even more sports 🏀 in the future!

Thanks for reading!!!

Fraser River Discovery Centre

The field trip to the Fraser River Discovery Centre gave students an insight into just how connected we are to this unique ecosystem. Through interactive, place-based  workshops, students were able to understand the historical, cultural and economic influence (impact) of this river basin. The river is also home to the endangered sturgeon, students discussed the human impact onto their habitat. Parents , please read your child’s post about this field trip on their blogs.

Creating our West Coast Indigenous Art

On November 26th, Burnaby Art Gallery presented an in class workshop about traditional forms of the west coast indigenous art forms. Students made comparisons of the different techniques and meanings . The significance of the ecosystem and the environment and how everything is connected in the art is  a study of the delicate balance of our world. Students created their own art piece inspired by these original pieces of art. The workshop will be used to create art about the student’s endangered animal projects in Term 2.

Voting for Our “Prime Minister”

On October 14th, students in Div. 14 participated in a mock election. Several “candidates” stepped forward to outline their platforms. They spoke with passion and enthusiasm. The participants were; Anushka, Sadie, Sean, Mohamad and Pavle.

Our students got a chance to vote after listening attentively to the speakers. Pavle was able to get the most votes. He ran on the platform of limiting the use of plastics and on global awareness of this issue. Pavle brought in metal straws for the class as part of his win. Way to go Pavle!

Thank you to all the candidates who participated. You prepared your speeches and delivered them with a lot of passion!

Student Votes

This term, we are learning about our parliamentary and democratic institutions in Canada. Students will take part in an election simulation (mock election) by listening to the candidates (peers) who are “nominated” to run for Prime Minister. They will require a political platform. The students will campaign to their own class only and ask for their votes. The classroom will be set up as a “voting” location and voters will mark their secret ballot to “elect” a Prime Minister.

Since this is a federal election year, students will also be researching about who the candidates are in their area, as well as their political platforms.

The main goal of this unit is teach the students about rights and responsibilities we have as Canadians, and help shape their future participation in our democratic voting process.
