Reading Tips For Home

READING TOGETHER: Children will learn that reading is fun, valued, you like spending time together. They will learn how books work, new words, and a sense of what reading is all about.  Stop for question time.  Take the time to talk about what you see, read and the feelings and thoughts about the story.  Make predictions.  Act out the story or change voices for different characters.  Make connections with others books, characters or themes.

BEFORE AND DURING READING QUESTIONS:

What story clues are in the title and in the pictures? Is this selection fiction or nonfiction? How do you know? Why do you want to read this story?

What do you think will happen next?  How do you feel about the main character?  Would you do things differently if you were the main character?  Does the story text make sense to you?  How do you think the story will end?  Is the author trying to teach you something?

AFTER READING:

How did the story make you feel?  What did you notice about the story? What did you like or dislike about the story?  Does the story remind you of any other story?  What were you wondering as you read?  Does this book make you think of anything else you have read?  What was your favourite part?  Were there any parts that surprised you?  What are you going to read next?

FOR INDEPENDENT READING, A GOOD-FIT BOOK IS THE WAY TO GO!

KKnow the words – Do I know most of the words? (5 finger test)

READING SKILLS/STRATEGIES:

It is important for children to visualize, connect, question, infer and summarize while reading.

In the primary grades, visualize, connect and question are the initial comprehension strategies.

It is also important for children to build reading stamina so that they can move from independently reading for 10 minutes to 20 minutes and eventually 30 minutes.

Daily 5 Stamina Reading video is provided here:

To support enhanced reading, think of the READING CAFE:

C – Comprehension – I understand what I read

A – Accuracy – I can read the words

F – Fluency – I can read accurately with expression

E – Expand Vocabulary – I know, find and use interesting words
