Literacy Week!

| Comments Off on Literacy Week!

We had so many book characters visit Clinton the other day.  It was a joy to see the Paper Bag Princess, Charlotte’s Web, Fly Guy, Hermione and Dogman!  The Clinton classroom doors are full of Door Decor to represent the love of reading and everyone is excited to participate in the upcoming Reading In The Dark!

Dr. Seuss has been an inspiration for the Division 10 door and what a surprise to have Thing 1 and Thing 2 drop by!  Clinton Staff and students are hoping that Family Literacy Day will be the beginning of a flood of reading, writing, speaking and listening, both at school and at home, as the Clinton Book Flood flows.  Happy Reading!

We have our favourites, our challenges and those pieces of apparatus that we have made good progress on. Check out our strength, flexibility, balance and coordination!  Thanks for hanging out with us in the gym!

The Lights That Dance In The Night!

| Comments Off on The Lights That Dance In The Night!

Our classroom inquiry continues to open up the possibilities of the seasons with January at the forefront of our Winter curiousities.  We are beginning the year considering the relationship between the Sun, Earth and Moon as we explore Measurement Of Time.

In learning about the sun, we found that the Northern Lights of the Arctic, the Aurora, are in direct relationship to the sun.  We were inspired by the book “The Lights That Dance In The Night” so we added artistic flair to our learning.  The images shared are accompanied by artist statements, some of which mention the aesthetic elements (line, colour, balance, emotion) of a piece of work.  The bulletin boards and classroom displays are always available for your viewing.

What Stories Do The Seasons Share With Us led to some creative writing, turning winter words into poetic stories through the use of a Cinquain pattern.  Students shared ideas and then worked independently to create their Winter Wonderland of Poetry.

Happy 2023!

We are starting the year off with many opportunities for literacy.  Division 10 had some time to engage in word work activities today.  We have a new reading corner as well as magnetic word boards, words on the wall whiteboards, wood letter sorting boxes, ABC order letters, rhyme time wheels and poetry books as well as Boggle word builder pages.

We also looked at a library resource called Tumble Books during our laptop time.  It can be accessed at home from going to the Clinton Website, heading to Library and clicking on Web Resources. We tumbled right into some good read-alouds and word games.

Literacy Week will be coming up at the end of the month.  Home reading will also be starting soon.  Division 10 is going to work with both non-fiction and fiction so let the learning begin as we start a new year!

Happy New Year!

On Air With the Clinton Thunderbirds!

| Comments Off on On Air With the Clinton Thunderbirds!

Winter is in the air but the Clinton Thunderbirds performed over 2 nights and Division 10 was part of the Wednesday concert performances.  The grade 2’s danced and played guitar for Run, Run Rudolph, sang in the primary choir and performed at the finale.

What a most amazing way to begin the festive season. Here is a snapshot of their practices and their cool attitudes.

Buddy Time!

| Comments Off on Buddy Time!

Lately, we have been enjoying time with our Buddy Class.  On Friday, students from Ms. Benson’s class invited us to their room and helped guide us with the laptops.  We are learning how to independently log on with username and password, access the classroom blog and make use of virtual fieldtrips and educational sites/games that are highlighted on the blog sidebar.

Friday was also a very cold, North Pole day in our classroom as the heater wasn’t working.  Spending time with our buddy class in their classroom with the virtual fire warmed our hearts.  Having lunch in the library was a new experience too and we thank Ms. Hossack for providing a cozy space for us.

We now have the heater working again and we are so thankful for that as Winter is on the way!

November Love of Snow and Books!

| Comments Off on November Love of Snow and Books!

We are going to be starting December with snow on the ground.  What fun Division 10 had today with sun and snow.

We also watched the Robins and our Garden Squirrel enjoy our red berry tree in the Clinton garden.  It helps continue our journey our classroom inquiry, “What Stories Do The Seasons Share With Us?”

We also want to thank Ms. Hossack for our new book bags.  “I Love Books” is exactly what we say when we thank Ms. Hossack for the opportunity to listen to some amazing stories and take out some interesting books. It is hoped that books will be kept safe to and from school when housed in the book bags.  Please remember to have library books return to school each Tuesday.

During Term 1, we have been building our reading stamina in class.  Students are able to now independently read for 15 minutes as we work toward 20 minutes. In the new year, students in Division 10 will be encouraged to participate in daily reading stamina activities at home.

As we say with our Daily 5 Reading, “Everyday is a Reading Day!”

Pacific North West and Canadian Vibes!

| Comments Off on Pacific North West and Canadian Vibes!

We are ending November off with some more stories of the season shared through the beauty of the Cedar Tree; the tree of life for the First Nations of the Pacific North West Coast.

Students have connected to the tree through stories such as Stand Like A Cedar by Nicola Campbell.  They have linked their ideas about the Cedar Tree through connections to story and their personal experiences.  They made text to text, text to self and text to world connections.  A linking chain will continue to grow as the Autumn season of learning continues.

The creative process was experienced when students made use of Cedar boughs and branches for visual art. Students painted with the branches, painted on the branches and added the branches to their art pieces.  They created artist statements that shared their appreciation for the Cedar Tree.

Team Canada then became a focus for division 10 with much cheering and support going toward the Canadian players.  Team Canada has not participated in the World Cup in 36 years so a moment in history was shared amongst the students in the classroom.  Despite the loss, there was pride.  Claire shared, “they may not have won the game but they won in our hearts.”  It was an exciting game and we look forward to games 2 and 3.   Go Canada Go!

We Are TWINNING!

| Comments Off on We Are TWINNING!

Clinton Spirit Day was a great success thanks to the Leadership Team encouraging us to find friendship through being Twins; and for some of us, Triplets.  We have been sharing thoughts about TEAMWORK and FRIENDSHIP these past few weeks and this was a wonderful way to create some new partnerships.

Here is a look at our Twinning Time!

We also found friendship to be a main theme for Charlotte’s Web.  We finished the novel and enjoyed a movie afternoon on our Twin Spirit Day to capture the full essence of friendship and partnership.

Next week, the World Cup of Soccer/Football will begin and we have considered some ways that our Team Canada can work toward a positive teamwork effort to score a GOOOOAL!  We gained insight and inspiration from the book titled, GOAL!

      GO CANADA GO!!!!
