Before we go to Winter Break, you will be receiving the term one report card. In December, we will begin working on term two units &#8212;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 0.95em;\">\u00a0one on CREATIVITY\/CHANGE, and the second on EXPLORATION\/IDENTITY.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is an overview of the many things we did during TERM ONE, FALL 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>To tie the big ideas from our curriculum together into a larger, enduring understanding,<br \/>\nwe studied all subjects through the lens of a universal, conceptual theme.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>We focused on <\/strong><strong>the concept of <em>SYSTEMS<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>in our unit\u00a0<\/strong><strong><em>BODY WORKS.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Unit Focus Statement: \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Our personal choices play a role<br \/>\n<\/em><em>in how the interconnected system of the human body works.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Core Competency Focus:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><em>Personal Awareness and Responsibility<br \/>\nCritical Thinking<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">What is the SYSTEM for a great learning community?<\/span><br \/>\n(Core Competencies, Socials, Science, PHE, ADST, Career Education)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_112910.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7019 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_112910-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_112910-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_112910.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We spent the first two weeks creating the <strong>foundation of a great learning community<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>We worked in small teams to design <strong>marble roller coasters<\/strong> all over the classroom, discussing both science concepts and what great collaboration looks like during projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/4hcrih.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7016 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/4hcrih-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/4hcrih-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/4hcrih.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a>To get to know one another, we created <strong>Six Word Memoir Pictures<\/strong>, to communicate some of our interests, strengths, or thoughts to our new classmates. We also did a variety of games and collaborative math challenges and puzzles. What do we want to get out of our learning? (output) What do we need to put in to our learning experiences to accomplish our desired output? (input\/process)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_111814.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7018 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_111814-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_111814-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230907_111814.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 136px) 100vw, 136px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To better understand this, we analyzed other systems we know, such as our community and ecosystems. We debriefed our roller coaster activity: <em>What makes an exciting roller coaster work well?<\/em> (physics, clothoid loops, creativity, speed, etc.) We identified what our classroom would need to be a successful system. Students brainstormed essential agreements and values, which we refer to every day in our work together. <em>What kind of community do we want to build together?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the term, <strong>we focused on the core competencies of\u00a0<em>personal awareness<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>critical thinking<\/em><\/strong>, which were embedded into each activity and lesson for the unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/02\/Social-Thinking-and-Me.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-6456 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/02\/Social-Thinking-and-Me-300x270.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"131\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/02\/Social-Thinking-and-Me-300x270.jpg 300w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/02\/Social-Thinking-and-Me-768x691.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/02\/Social-Thinking-and-Me.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Each week we engaged in social thinking activities as part of our morning Recalibrate Time.<\/strong> This is an opportunity to recalibrate or prepare our thinking as the day starts, so we can have positive relationships and learning experiences at school. We discussed how:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking carefully for social cues helps us find out the expected behaviour in a particular situation,<\/li>\n<li>Our unexpected behaviour can cause others stress and affect our relationships,<\/li>\n<li>Our reaction to a problem needs to match the size of the problem,<\/li>\n<li>Active listening is important to building relationships and involves critical thinking and specific body language,<\/li>\n<li>Stepping outside of our comfort zone, taking a risk to try something new, is when our best learning happens, and<\/li>\n<li>Everyone is learning something, we can&#8217;t be perfect at all of it, and it is okay to make mistakes or to not know something!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">THE HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS!<\/span><br \/>\n(Science, Socials,\u00a0 Math, Inquiry Processes, LA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230912_102021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7020 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230912_102021-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230912_102021-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230912_102021.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 118px) 100vw, 118px\" \/><\/a>What do you already know about <strong>human anatomy<\/strong>? We created life-sized drawings of classmates to identify the inside parts we already knew from our many body systems. We already knew quite a bit, but we needed some more specific information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230915_114301.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7021 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230915_114301-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"163\" height=\"122\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230915_114301-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230915_114301-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20230915_114301.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><\/a>So, we did <strong>independent investigation stations<\/strong>! We gathered facts from non-fiction books and online resources like Kids Health, and completed fun experiments about our heart rate, the digestive system length, and the role of saliva in breaking down food, among others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/2i6dft.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7014 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/2i6dft-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"119\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/2i6dft-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/2i6dft.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 119px) 100vw, 119px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We then pretended the <strong>Human Body Corporation<\/strong> was having money problems, needed to make budget cuts, and planned to fire one of the many organs in the body! After learning about paragraphs and business letter format, each student chose an organ to research further and wrote a letter to the Corporation with detailed reasons their organ should not be fired!<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211006_094428.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5870 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211006_094428-225x300.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211006_094428-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211006_094428.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe did experiments to expand our knowledge of germs and how they are spread, and about how blood typing works!<\/strong> Students learned to use the scientific method, to gather data through careful observations, and to analyze results using math and critical-thinking skills.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144128.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7025 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144128-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"121\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144128-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144128.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 121px) 100vw, 121px\" \/><\/a>We discussed <strong>genetic traits and extracted strawberry DNA<\/strong>, a process which allowed us to learn the role soap plays in bursting the cell membranes of pathogens. There&#8217;s a reason to use soap when washing hands!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144136.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-7026 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144136-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144136-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231023_144136.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a>Then, we had discussions about herd immunity, vaccines, epistemology (the diagnosis of diseases), communicable and non-communicable diseases, and some of the personal choices we can make to help prevent disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231027_141655.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7030 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231027_141655-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231027_141655-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231027_141655.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a>Our lab on <strong>\u201cpatient zero\u201d<\/strong> allowed us to see how germs are spread quickly in a group!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we tested a variety of sites in the school and grew germ colonies in petri dishes. We made careful observations, gathered and analyzed data, and crunched the numbers to determine the probability of having touched a bacteria, yeast, mold, or fungus. <strong>We used math to help us make some positive personal choices to prevent the spread of germs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During all experiments, we used critical-thinking to ask questions and make conclusions, and we used personal awareness to work with others collaboratively and safely.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211105_112348.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5883 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211105_112348-300x225.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 178px) 100vw, 178px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211105_112348-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211105_112348-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/20211105_112348.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the end of the unit, <strong>each student chose a disease to investigate further with a partner.<\/strong> They learned how to find information, take research notes, and present their information to the class in a PowerPoint presentation and speech. Afterwards, they used their new found knowledge, pretending to be a group of doctors with other students, and helping <strong>diagnose mystery diseases<\/strong> presented by Ms. D.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">What helps the body system work well?<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>(Socials, Science, PHE-Health, Math, Career Education, Language Arts):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-instance fbx-link\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2019\/11\/FNHA-First-Nations-Perspective-On-Health-And-Wellness-e1574985087699.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-4456 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2019\/11\/FNHA-First-Nations-Perspective-On-Health-And-Wellness-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"144\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>To make our SYSTEM of the human body function effectively, we need to be aware of the INPUTS we put into our body. What are the personal choices we can make that help us to be healthy? Students looked at informational graphs, watched TED talks, and listened to a variety of perspectives about good health to learn how to make positive food and environmental choices.<\/p>\n<p>This included exploring the <strong>Indigenous Health and Wellness Model<\/strong> to discuss holistic aspects of health, such as the relationship between good health and your connection with family and community. Students looked at Indigenous Medicine Wheel models and reflected on the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual things that contribute to our good health.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/tckpuv.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5959 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/tckpuv-300x225.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/tckpuv-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/tckpuv-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/tckpuv.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>How does what and how we eat affect our bodies and health?\u00a0 We discussed <strong>mindful eating<\/strong> during lunch, which means having presence while eating and becoming aware of the eating experience. If we slow down, we taste more of the food and allow our digestive system time to do its job properly!<\/p>\n<p>Students also brought in some favourite snacks and <strong>analyzed ingredients lists and the math on food labels<\/strong> to better understand the nutritional value of processed foods. We sorted foods into categories of <strong>GO, SLOW, and WHOA<\/strong> to better understand how much of certain foods we can have based on their nutritional content.<br \/>\n<a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/fp0af4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5944 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/fp0af4-300x231.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/fp0af4-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/fp0af4-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2022\/02\/fp0af4.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also studied the impact of vitamins and minerals on the body. <strong>Each student chose and conducted research about a vitamin or mineral and its impact on the body.<\/strong> They then created informational posters with facts to share with their classmates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Gut Bacteria and Artificial Intelligence!<\/span><br \/>\n(Science, ADST, PHE, Technology, Math Computational Thinking)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231016_134201.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-7024 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231016_134201-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231016_134201-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231016_134201-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2023\/11\/20231016_134201.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>As we explored nutrition, we learned about our second brain located in our gut! Ever feel &#8220;butterflies&#8221; in your stomach or lower guts before you have a test? That&#8217;s your gut brain! Inside our gut are many healthy bacteria helping us with the digestive process. We discussed the strong connection between having a healthy gut microbiome and our overall physical and mental wellness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Through Science World&#8217;s Tech-Up Program, we had an in-class workshop about gut bacteria! <\/strong>We learned about the different types of gut bacteria, what conditions in our gut cultivate healthy bacteria, and how we can take care of our microbiome by getting proper sleep, managing our stress, only taking antibiotics when needed, and eating healthy foods including fibre and green, leafy vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>Then, we learned about the language of <strong>artificial intelligence chatbots<\/strong>, natural language processing. As a class, we programmed an AI Chatbot to answer questions as if it was a specific gut bacteria! This involved some basic coding, computational thinking, and identifying the specific information the AI would need in order to respond. We had great discussions about how AI could be helpful, as well as the ethics needed to use it responsibly. We look forward to doing more coding in December as part of the Hour of Code!<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Mental Health &amp; Self-Expression<\/span><br \/>\n(Socials\/Science\/PHE\/Career Ed\/Fine Art\/LA):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"fbx-link fbx-instance\" href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2021\/06\/Puzzles-and-Brain.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5643 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/files\/2021\/06\/Puzzles-and-Brain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"99\" \/><\/a>Students explored the connection between our mental health and physical health.<\/p>\n<p>As we played a variety of active games in the gym, we explored how to monitor our heart rate and identified the <strong>value of daily exercise and getting the appropriate amount of sleep!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We discussed <strong>brain structure<\/strong> and how emotion impacts higher thinking, so we can better understand how we self-regulate in times of stress.
