{"id":5457,"date":"2021-02-10T16:18:17","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T00:18:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/?p=5457"},"modified":"2021-02-10T16:18:17","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T00:18:17","slug":"new-unit-february-march-2021-communication-is-the-key","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/deterraa\/2021\/02\/10\/new-unit-february-march-2021-communication-is-the-key\/","title":{"rendered":"New Unit February &#8211; March 2021: &#8220;Communication is the Key!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hello Everyone!<\/p>\n<p>This week we have started a new unit which will run from February &#8211;\u00a0 March 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit Title:<br \/>\n<\/strong>Communication is the KEY!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concept:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>POWER<\/p>\n<p><strong>Core Competency Focus:<\/strong>\u00a0 Critical Thinking \/ Communication<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unit Focus Statement:<\/strong><br \/>\nBeing an educated citizen requires reflection and critical thinking about how we communication and receive information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Areas of Inquiry:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The power of an educated citizen<\/li>\n<li>Questioning and research skills<\/li>\n<li>Forms of media and how they work (media literacy)<\/li>\n<li>Fake news and social media safety (digital literacy)<\/li>\n<li>Science Labs and communication results (primary vs secondary research)<\/li>\n<li>Numbers in the News<\/li>\n<li>Effective use of communication skills (presentations, writing, team activities, drama, visual arts)<\/li>\n<li>The power of storytelling through oral traditions and visual arts<\/li>\n<li>The power of walking and mindfulness<\/li>\n<li>Communication with others using basic French<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Curricular Activities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Using Media Smarts BC online program for examining role of media in our lives.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding how media resources are organized; analyzing news broadcasts.<\/li>\n<li>Talking with a current CBC Journalist via Zoom on February 22nd<\/li>\n<li>Creating our own broadcast news reports or newspaper articles.<\/li>\n<li>Doing a variety of science experiments to practice the scientific method and primary research documentation.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at wordless books and using visual imagery to create oral stories.<\/li>\n<li>Exploring Indigenous oral storytelling traditions, and how stories are used to communicate important messages or to pass knowledge from one generation to the next.<\/li>\n<li>Continuing our independent project research<\/li>\n<li>Creating watercolour pictures of the ABCs of Life and wire sculptures<\/li>\n<li>Continuing work on proportionate reasoning, including ordering of fractions and decimals.<\/li>\n<li>Looking at how math is used in the news and in advertisements.<\/li>\n<li>Documenting our Independent Project Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Students will be investigating media, communications, and other topics above through some at-home explorations or questions in their planners. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please support them with discussion about these questions, as well as encouragement to set aside time at home to do these explorations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>***As students work on independent project, they really do need to set aside time at home to be doing research, and not just relying on time at school.<\/p>\n<p>Some students have recently said they don&#8217;t have any time to do any work at home, even when it is a simple thinking activity in their journals, because of their activities load.<\/p>\n<p>As students get older and go into upper grades, they need to have dedicated time at home to catch up on work as needed.
