Our two statements for debate will be the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Playing video games is a beneficial activity for young children.<\/li>\n<li>Digital technology tools have a negative impact on young children.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will be choosing one of the statements above to research in detail, finding information about both sides of the debate, for and against.<\/p>\n<p>As you look for information, be aware of finding evidence that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is from a reputable source<\/li>\n<li>has real-life examples of how technology is being used<\/li>\n<li>is new (last three years is preferable) and updated, current<\/li>\n<li>is in books as well as the web<\/li>\n<li>involves facts not just opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use websites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>that end in .edu, as it is an education website<\/li>\n<li>that end in .gov as it comes from a government website<\/li>\n<li>that end in .org, as it is a non-profit (but be aware of a biased perspective)<\/li>\n<li>that are news websites we know to be reputable and local (Vancouver Sun, Globe and Mail, BBC, CBC, Associated Press, CTV, Global, NY Times, NPR, and more)<\/li>\n<li>that show current information (search in Google News)<\/li>\n<li>that show research and come from people who are reputable and know about the topic<\/li>\n<li>TED Talks, especially from TED Ed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Avoid websites:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>like wikipedia &#8211; which is great for quick facts but not for research<\/li>\n<li>You Tube &#8212; great for entertainment or informational videos, but not necessarily research, unless you can tell where the video is coming from directly<\/li>\n<li>that end in .com, as these are often businesses<\/li>\n<li>that have lots of ads or sponsored content<\/li>\n<li>that have a reading level you can&#8217;t understand<\/li>\n<li>like Huffington Post that have news articles with very little information in them<\/li>\n<li>that are blogs, which focus on giving out someone&#8217;s opinions<\/li>\n<li>editorials in newspapers, which focus on opinions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Here are some websites or articles to consider.<\/strong> <em>I am not posting these because I believe in their points of view, but rather so we have research on both sides of the debate.<\/em> (Please visit as I add to this list.):<\/p>\n<p>NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/12\/17\/571443683\/the-call-in-teens-and-depression\">Teen Depression and Smartphones<\/a><\/p>\n<p>TED <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/sara_dewitt_3_fears_about_screen_time_for_kids_and_why_they_re_not_true\">3 Fears About Screen Time and why they are not true<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Salon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2017\/08\/27\/how-the-smartphone-affected-an-entire-generation-of-kids_partner\/\">How the Smartphone affects a whole generation<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mindshift <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/mindshift\/2017\/08\/23\/a-textbook-dilemma-digital-or-paper\/\">A Textbook dilemna: Paper or Digital<\/a><\/p>\n<p>NPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/04\/17\/474525392\/attention-students-put-your-laptops-away\">Attention Students: Put Your Laptops Away<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hello Everyone!
