Please note — Wednesday is a four period day.  You will have all of your classes.

Period 2 – notify your teacher if you plan on running the Terry Fox run on Tuesday.

MONDAY

  • Independent Reading – log your pages from last week
  • Share annotation homework from over the weekend for The No Guitar Blues.  What did Fausto learn?  Did he resolve his conflict?  What is the theme (or purpose of this story)?  What message is the author trying to communicate to the reader.
  • Short Story – Thank You Ma’am by Langston Hughes (RR)
  • Class discussion – introduction to making connections
  • H.W. – Read for pleasure.  Venn Diagram is an in class reading assignment.

TUESDAY

Terry Fox Run – Period 2 (classes may be shorter today)

  • Venn Diagram Assignment (reading comprehension activity – must be completed in FLEX if you are absent).
  • Grammar Package #1 – Complete pages #1 &2 (H)

  • Work on outline for character paragraph.  Use the template and write your ideas in point form.  Remember to use the character inferencing homework we went over at the beginning of the class to help you with this.

Shape Of The Week September 20th – September 24th

MONDAY

  • Silent Reading
  • Hand in good copy of narrative paragraph along with draft, self assessment, and peer feedback sheet
  • What does it mean to be courageous?  How do we find the courage to stand up for what we believe it? Can bravery be learned?
  • Anchor texts – Cooks Brook and Resisting Hitler – Class reading together (R)
  • H.W. complete question package for homework (H)

TUESDAY

  • Silent Reading
  • Discuss the homework from last day
  • What is plot? Check out the definitions for introduction, inciting incident, climax, falling action, resolution (see literary terms in Readings and Resources)
  • Complete a plot map for the animated short,  “Taking The Plunge”
  • Read the short story, “The Nest”
  • PERIOD 3 ONLY (BECAUSE YOU HAVE AN EXTRA DAY)  – complete a plot map for the short story “The Nest”

WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY

  • Review last day’s homework
    • Plot map for the animated short “Taking The Plunge”
    • Plot map for the short story “The Nest”
  • Class groups to formulate answers and present discussion questions for “The Nest” (H)

Welcome Back! September 2021

If you have made it this far, you are in the right place! Stay tuned each week to keep tabs on your readings, assignments, and homework.

There are supplies that you will need for English class.  They are as follows:

Supplies Needed For Class

  • A three-ring binder with lined loose-leaf paper. Some students choose to have two separate smaller binders for each course, and others choose to put two courses into one two-inch binder with a divider in the middle.  Either option is fine.
  • 2-3 Blue/black pens for writing assignments
  • A pencil
  • 2 coloured pens for editing
  • White-out tape
  • 1-2 packages of sticky notes (3 inch x 3 inch)
  • 1 yellow highlighter
  • 1 small personal bottle of hand sanitizer
  • A water bottle
  • A silent reading book – more on this next week. Students will have a chance to take out a book from the school library or bring one of their own

For days we are working on projects

  • Pencil crayons and felt pens
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
