Hi  everyone! Sadly I’m at home with a miserable cold but my brain, while foggy and tired at times, won’t stop thinking about how to make our learning environment meaningful and fun. I sense that most students had fun designing and modifying their catapults. I heard lots of interesting conversations while you shared your ideas and then tested to see if they worked.  What is your definitions of it “working”?catapult-1

QUESTION:     What did you learn that will help you next time? Did you learn how to manage your feelings when you get frustrated? Did you learn something about building a simple machine? Did you learn what words others used that made you want to keep trying or maybe quit? Please add a comment below to tell me about what you learned.

Hi folks we started investigating solutions this week.  Yesterday, several students planned and carried out their own investigations.  science goop sam

We started with the following:

“Is ___ a solution?” Prove it! Several students thoughtfully considered what they know, made predictions and then proceeded to explore. Please write a comment below and let us know what surprises or challenges you experienced.  If you are still planning your inquiry, feel free to post your thoughts.

Division 3 had the best ever field trip on Monday April 20. We went to the Vancouver Aquarium. We saw many interesting displays about animals and their habitats including those believed to be endangered species. The highlights also included seeing a 4-D movie about sea monsters from long ago. Many thanks to parent leaders for their help keeping us safe, and to TranLink for providing free bus passes for the entire class for the day! We were the lucky recipients of a field trip draw in the fall.

Hi folks,

Just a reminder that you have Young People’s Concert first thing tomorrow morning.  Make sure you are at school at 8:55.  We will do attendance and then get on the bus.  You will be seeing a show by an amazing “Hoop Dancer”.

We will have a few guest bloggers tomorrow to tell us about the show.

We will also be having a guest in our classroom tomorrow. She will be coming to lead our learning about reconciliation and Aboriginal culture. Make sure you bring your questions and thinking caps!

Don’t forget to talk to your families about the writing topic you heard about today.  “Which season (summer, fall, winter, spring), is the best and why.”  I’m looking forward to reading about what you think.

Finally looking ahead to Thursday morning, please gather your recycled supplies for building your “car”.  I saw most of your plans today and they look great. I know parents are enthusiastic to build too, but this is your project.  Tell them they can build one with you too, but you will still need to do your own (or with your partner) at school. Make sure you look at the criteria sheet we made together.   Its all about learning, problem solving, being creativity and using your imagination.  I’m hoping the next phase will be to add a power source and computer to it…we will see!

Microbeads

Nathan Cai Grade 4

Hello fellow readers! There has been a serious discovery that our grade four class has learned. Do you know what that is? It is microbeads. They are small plastic beads that are in personal care products such as toothpaste, face wash, and many more. Microbeads are the shiny dots in Crest and Colgate toothpastes and deep clean face washes. The microbeads cause pollution to the oceans and the great lakes because they are non biodegradable. After it enters the sewer system, it affects our food chain because the fish eat the beads, and if we eat the fish, it will enter our bodies. Luckily, there are some companies that are banning the use of microbeads. Thank you for reading my paragraph on microbeads.

Check in to see what some of our other readers and writers think about microbeads, and other forms of pollution!

Today our Gr.5’s  learned about compound machines in science. Kendra says, “We had to start a collage and read a booklet to learn about them. We need to look for pictures of both simple and compound machines for our collages. “

When do you use a compound machine?  What parts of it are simple machines? Please respond with a comment.

Science- due tomorrow

Did you wonder what teachers do? With the help of Elaine Jaltema I led a session where teachers got to learn about smarter science, and hands on exploration for students. One group used our supplies to create what the called the psychedelic tornado. image

In the afternoon I was able to hear more first hand stories of residential school experiences. These people demonstrate such sincere strength of their spirits. Very moving. This helped me to better understand how important my job is to build awareness of our shared histories.image

One thing I learned was how to share thoughts, ideas, and pictures on twitter, and in the process I found lots of wonderful interesting information. Social media can be a powerful tool for learning.

Biomes of the world

mtnYou have been learning about ecosystems, habitats, biotic and abiotic things in our world. I have asked you each to think about your needs for life and then the things you enjoy and then figure out which biome you would like to live in.

Please share your thoughts with me and your classmates here.
