COVID-19

Dear parents,

As you have probably heard, the Ministry of Education has suspended all in-class instruction until further notice. We are deeply saddened by this but know we need to stay safe and be a part of the change to help flatten the curve. We are waiting to hear from our district to see how we can support the continuity of learning for your children post spring break. We are creating a school plan this coming Monday, March 30th. I will send a letter, update Class Dojo and our class blog as soon as we figure out something concrete. Please make sure you are signed up to receive email and Class-Dojo updates and notifications.

Enjoy the rest of your spring break as best you can – embrace the family time and enjoy the sunshine 🌞

Please read through the following links/resources.

Love, Ms Corwin

Global School PLAY Day

This coming Wednesday (February 5) is Global School Play Day. This day was designed to raise awareness about the importance of unstructured play for children’s development. You can read more about Global School Play Day, here: http://www.globalschoolplayday.com/

What will Play Day look like on Wednesday? NO screens, little structure. Students will participate in play-based academic activities in the morning, and will engage in free play (explorations) in the afternoon. Students will be invited to bring one toy from home to share with friends (e.g. LEGO, stuffy, building blocks, board game).

If you are interested in exploring the idea of play to promote children’s growth and development further, please click on the link below to view a TED talk by Peter Gray on the importance of play:

Thank you for your support!

Online Reading Programs

Hello Families,

There are two sites I would like to share with you, if you are interested in having your child read online at home to supplement their home reading.

TumbleBooks (Tumble book Library)

To access:

  1. Go to the Armstrong School Website.
  2. Click on Library link above the picture of the school.
  3. Click on Web Resources.
  4. Click on “TumbleBook Library.”
  5. If your child wants to hear an Audio of the books, click on the orange “Read alongs” button!

GET Epic!

This is similar to TumbleBooks. The website (which can also be downloaded as an app on your smartphone or iPad) has great books for all levels of readers. We have been using Get Epic as an option during Daily 5 for those that are working on “Listening to Reading”.

To access at home:

  • download the app, or visit www.getepic.com/students, and enter our class code: nas1309. You will have a 30 day free trial use of this site.
  • From there, your child can access hundreds of books that they can follow along to (the kids know to click on the “read to me” button if they want the books read out loud to them!)

Liam’s Australian Bushfire Fundraiser

Hello families!

A student in our class, Liam, has expressed great concern over the bushfires that are currently happening in Australia. With determination to help, Liam, with the help of his classmates, will be advertising a fundraiser, beginning next week. “Liam’s Australian Bushfire Fundraiser” will take place Jan 13 -24. Liam will be going around class to class, sharing a short presentation on what is happening in Australia, and what he is doing to help. If you can support, please send your child to school with a donation this or next week, so Liam and Ms. Corwin can submit it to the Australian Red Cross (to train new response teams, and help victims). Posters will be displayed around the school beginning next week, and Liam or Ms. Corwin will be happy to answer any other questions you may have about what is happening!

Thank you for your support!

Ms. Corwin & Division 16
