- Paperless Mad Minute Practice
Set a timer for 1 minute and your child can go across each row of questions saying the answers. At the end of 1 minute, your child can colour in the first tiny circle on the first row if they got ALL of the questions correct. You would repeat this procedure at another practice time. You begin on the first row again. Once you are able to complete the first row correctly on 3 separate practices, then you can begin on row 2 and repeat the same procedure. This will give your child lots of fact practice just focusing on the Mental Math strategy of Adding & Subtracting: Tens Partners

Writing: Today I want you to write about a place you love. Listen to the following story called “All the Places to Love”: All the Places to Love After close your eyes and think of a place you love. It could be your home, a tree house, Grandma’s house, the beach, the park, etc. Draw a picture of the place you love. I haven’t been to your place so your drawing should have enough detail that I can really picture what it looks like. Parents you can brainstorm some ideas for the writing with these prompts: Where is the place you love? What do you see? Who is in the place you love? What do you do in the place you love? After brainstorming write about your place. Kindergarten: stretch out all the sounds you hear, try and write one sentence. Grade 1: remember to start your sentence with a capital, use punctuation, spaces between words, spell words you know correctly, and take risks with words you are not sure of. Use your C.O.P.S Strategy. Write 3 or more sentences. You can do this on a piece of paper or in one of your writing books from school. I would love to see your work.
Reading: Please read the following poem “June”. Kindergarten: can you count how many letter “e” you can find in the poem? Have an adult read you them poem and then you try on your own. Point to the words as you read. Grade 1: read the poem to an adult. Can you find the compound word? (sunshine). Can you think of 4 different compound words? Here is a little game to help you:

So far we have used numerals, words, pictures, ten frames, tally marks, fingers, dice, etc. Today we are going to use something called Base Ten Blocks. Watch this following clip to get an idea of what Base Ten Blocks look like and how to use them to represent numbers: Place Value First Grade

Literacy
Writing: Today you are going to write about the first time you did something. Listen to this story first called “Very Last First Time”: The Very Last First Time Think of a first time you: rode a bike, did a sport, scored a goal, you got a pet, a new toy, went somewhere: school, zoo, beach, etc. Tell your parent and listen to their idea too. Parents you can help brainstorm by asking: When did it happen, where did it happen, who helped you, what did you do, how did you feel. After brainstorming write about your first time. Kindergarten: stretch out all the sounds you hear, try and write one sentence. Grade 1: remember to start your sentence with a capital, use punctuation, spaces between words, spell words you know correctly, and take risks with words you are not sure of. Write 3 or more sentences. You can do this on a piece of paper or in one of your writing books from school.
Reading: Kindergarten: your words this week all have the diagraph “sh”. Remember our poem “s-h, sh, sh, sh, s-h, sh, sh, sh, sh there’s a shark, sh there’s a shark. When you hear the sh sound write down the s and h : fish, mash, shark, ash. Grade 1: Your words are called “doozers” they are tricky and you can’t sound them out. You need to just be able to remember how to spell them: was, of, are, said. The second round: one, once, you, come.
Math
Kindergarten: Watch and play along with this song about subitizing: Subitize with a Pirate After you can play roll and cover with a parent or by yourself. You will need the gameboard below and a die (if you don’t have one just make cards 1-6). Roll the die (or grab a card) and place a counter (any small object) over the matching number on the board (e.g. if you roll a 5 you need to find a square that has 5 dots). Whoever gets five in a row wins. Play a couple times.
Grade 1s: You are going to continue practicing with base ten blocks. Watch this: Numbers in the Teens When you are done do the teen numbers match up. For each numeral (13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19) listed you need to colour it, the 10 frame, and base 10 blocks that show the same numeral all the same colour (e.g. you would colour the box with 13, 13 in base 10, and 13 on a ten frame all the same colour).
Special Activity
See if you can get BINGO with this screen free bingo card. You can go up, down, vertical or horizontal. Keep working on the card all week and maybe you can get a black out (all the squares covered)!

Can you make a maze outside using sticks? If you want watch this clip for an idea: Building a Maze using Sticks
- Ask your child to draw their own maze. Basic is better
- Collect sticks and branches and any other nature items you will use.
- Ask your child to make their maze, out of the sticks, using the picture they made and the materials they collected.
- Trial and error. They may have to change their plan to make it work. That’s ok! Builder change their plans too!
- Once it’s complete try going through the maze if it’s big enough or putting a toy through it if its smaller. Try it again!
Friday June 12th
Morning Message: Good Morning. Today is Friday June 12th 2020. What do you call cheese that is not yours? Nacho cheese! How many times can you find the diagraph “ch”? Remember our poem: c-h ch, ch,ch c-h, ch, ch, ch chickens like to cha cha chickens like to cha cha.
Writing: Today we are going to do something called a quick write. I am going to give you a topic, you can brainstorm ideas, words, and phrases related to the topic (parents you can write these ideas down so kids can use them if needed) and then you are going to just write. You may want to tell me a story about the topic, give me information about it, make a list, write a poem, etc. Whatever you want to do is great just keep writing. When you think you are done reread what you have and see if you can add a little more. Parents you can set a timer or just let them write until they are ready to stop. I would start with 5 minutes but some students, especially the grade 1s might need 10 minutes. Kindergarten: stretch out all the sounds you hear, try and write one sentence. Grade 1: remember to start your sentences with a capital, use punctuation, spaces between words, spell words you know correctly, and take risks with words you are not sure of. Write 3 or more sentences. You can do this on a piece of paper or in one of your writing books from school. The topic I want you to write about is: (See Mrs. Chin’s email “Please Help.”) Please print the template provided and after your child completes it, please send it to me via email. DUE NEXT WEEK. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
Reading: Today you are going to practice some popcorn words (sight words) with a game called “sight word memory game”. We have completed all of our words Unit 26! Congratulations to all of our K’s and Grade Ones for continuing our Language Arts Program. For the month of June, we can review all of the sight words learned.
Create a 6 x 5 grid (you can make larger or smaller it’s up to you). Then randomly write out the sight words in each of the boxes (don’t forget to write them out in pairs). Next place post-it notes or pieces of paper on top of each word. When they are all covered have your child flip over two cards and read the words out. If it’s a match they keep the cards off but if they don’t match they need to get covered up again. Keep playing until all the matches are made. You can find list of sight words on our Teams page. Click on files (up at the top), then parent resources, and then choose a list. See example of how to set up the game board below:
Math: Today you are going to practice naming the numbers that come before, after, and in between (grade 1s). Watch this clip and see if you can answer the questions: Maths Basics Kindergarten your sheet is first and grade 1s your sheet is second.
Have a wonderful weekend! Make sure to get outside, play, and read every day.
