Blue Tango – Band students only

Hi everyone!

I have input a new piece in SmartMusic. The piece is called Blue Tango and it is a challenging but fun one! This is meant to be a fun, challenging piece to keep your chops working! Therefore, there is no due date (the due date is on last week for June just because the program needed me to input a date). I hope you have a blast with it!

Update for Burnaby District Strings

Hi Strings peep!

Just wanted to update everyone and see how you are all doing. I am happy with some of the students turning in recordings and I loved listening to all the practicing going on! Keep it up!

Level 1’s: I have added new assignments so please check it out!

Level 2’s: I need a few more students to sign in to Smart Music and if you are having troubles with it, please let me know and email me at lucy.chang@burnabyschools.ca.

Thank you and I hope everyone is staying safe!

Musical Form

A quick review on musical forms.

Music is organized and labeled using FORMS. Think about an easy song like Twinkle Twinkle. The form for Twinkle Twinkle is in ABA form. When you sing Twinkle Twinkle in your head, you can easily hear 3 sections or parts. 2 of these sections sounds the same while the middle part sounds different.

Let’s listen to another, more challenging song. This song is in AABA Form. See if you can pick out where the B section is (it will sound quite different from the beginning melody).

In “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland, you can see how the first two verses establish the main melody of the song. Then the bridge shifts the song into a different gear, giving it a contrasting quality. Then, the return to the last verse provides the listener a comfortable return to what is familiar.

A First verse Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
A Second verse Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
B Bridge Someday I’ll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are far behind me
A Final verse Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly…

Here is a list of common elemental forms:

ABA                AABA             ABAB              ABAC              ABACA           ABCBCA

Please listen to these 3 pieces, and answer what form each of these are in.

New Seesaw Platform

Dear beloved students and families,

This message is for all my primary students at Gilpin Elementary School. As I have slowly been introduced to new possibilities and ways of learning, I have collaborated with the primary teachers and we have established that using SeeSaw for all your schoolwork and activities may be the best option. Therefore, (with the exception of Ms. Song’s Grade 3/4 class. Ms. Song’s class will get activities through Teams) Div. 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 music activities have all been moved to SeeSaw. Please look forward to music activities there.

Thank you very much!

Marked

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to give a quick update on how everyone’s doing on SmartMusic.

I have heard from some students who have submitted their assignments on SmartMusic and I loved going through them and listening to those of you who has been practicing at home! I have written out comments and just given out simple marks (don’t worry about the marks as you don’t get report cards for strings). The comments are just small little things you can improve on and watch out for as you’re practicing. I will update new assignments again this Thursday. Keep it up and happy practicing!

MUSICPLAY High and Low

Hi everyone!

Right before Spring Break, we were training our ears for high and low sounds (Sol and Mi). This week’s activity is going to be listening activities! We will be looking at Music Play and practicing listening ears. There are 4 different activities and I can explain each one. You can practice 1 activity a day.

MUSICPLAY Link for High and low

01. Same or Different – Press the Play button and 2 sounds will appear. Click on Same if you think it sounds the same or Different, if you think the 2 sounds sound different.

02. Hunt for High or Low – H stands for High and L stands for Low. Drag the H letter toward the note that looks higher. Drag the L toward the note that looks lower.

03. Color Higher or Lower – Works almost same as 02. Hunt for High or Low. Color the high notes. You may have to full screen to see the colors on the bottom of the screen.

04. Which Way do the Notes Go? – Press the Play button and 2 sounds will appear. It will either sound from a High note to a Low note. Or a Low note to a High note.

I often play similar games during class times so I hope these games will keep you all entertained! Happy listening everyone!

Hi Strings peeps!

I have given out more assignments on SmartMusic so please check it out!

Level 1: #98 – 105 in Strings Explorer. This week’s focus will be on counting in 3’s. Please remember that a dotted half note (half note with a dot on the right side of it) get’s 3 counts. Please also start handing in the assignments so I can get a rough idea on where everyone is at. As usual, please email me at lucy.chang@burnabyschools.ca if you have any questions.

Level 2: Unfortunately, the pieces we have been practicing is not available on SmartMusic. However, I’d still like to ask for a recording emailed to me on 1 full pieces of your choice. If there are rests in between, you can skip the rests. As usual, please email me at lucy.chang@burnabyschools.ca if you have any questions.

Happy practicing!

If you are still having trouble accessing SmartMusic, please email me. You can also do the assignments separately off of SmartMusic and just looking at your own Essential Elements book and recording it on another device. I look forward to hearing you play!

EDIT: For those of you are not using SmartMusic, I will post the assignments here as well. So for this week’s assignment, please submit a recording of either:
