Thursday, May 7th – Child & Youth Mental Health Day

Good Morning Div. 4!

I am really looking forward to our Zoom Class meeting today at 11:00am! I hope you can join us!

Today is Child and Youth Mental Health dayEspecially during these hard times where we are separated from our classmates, friends and loved ones it’s really important we check in to see how we are feeling. It is also important to remember that there are so many people in our communities that care about us, even during this time of social distancing.

Mindfulness 

Spending a few minutes each day reflecting and being mindful can help you feel better. Today we will be continuing our Mindfulness Journal that we will share new ideas to add each week. Some days you will find prompts to write a little, draw a little, or just practice some breathing.

Good morning Div. 4 Scientists,

You can join me for a live reading of our new novel, Wishtree, at 10:00am this morning on the general channel of Teams! Hope to see you there 🙂

Today is Wednesday, so it is time for more science! Today’s mystery science is all about spring and flowers. How can we better understand the world around us?  

  1. Watch the video: How do flowers bloom in the spring & watch the bonuses (so cute)! 
  2. Try the activity (you don’t have to print anything – you can just create your own versions! 
    • Making your own moving flower! 
  3. Reflect on the activity (form below) 
  4. You can try an extension! 
    • You can see for yourself how water moves inside a plant. Fill a glass with water and add a few drops of red or blue food coloring. Place a white flower in the glass. Wait a few hours and watch to see what happens. Look closely at the flower petals. What do you notice? Repeat this experiment, but use a stalk of celery or a lettuce leaf. What do you predict will happen?

Good morning, Div. 4! I hope you are having a wonderful start to the day! Here are some ideas for your day!

Inquiry

 Today we’d like you to continue working on your inquiry research. You might have already picked ONE country you would like to focus on (if you are participating in the country inquiry).

Connecting to your explorations of dandelions yesterday can you find some information about the plants and landforms of your inquiry country? Do they have dandelions there? 

  • What plants are found in your country? 
  • Are there any interesting landforms such as mountain ranges, deserts, volcanoes, etc.? 

Some of you have already finished all the inquiry prompts, which is amazing! Today you can focus on extending your research to questions you’ve created on your own. What else are you interested in learning about your country? Follow your curiosities! 

Read, read, read!

WOW, currently as a class we’re at 249 books read and 102.5 hours read! That is so great! Plus, I know that so many of you are reading in different ways too! It would be great if you reflected on the reading you’ve done so far and share what you’ve enjoyed reading by completing a book review! You can find the book review template in your assignments on Teams!

You can also keep working on your math assignments from yesterday! Don’t forget to click the audio button to hear your math teachers read them aloud!

Exploring Nature: Dandelions

While you are out walking today, can you find a dandelion? There have been so many on my walks! I have had the opportunity to learn from Lori Snyder, a Métis herbalist who has shares her knowledge with students,

teachers, and communities across the district. Here is one of her guides to plants, all about dandelions. We can understand the dandelions traditional role and medicines in Indigenous cultures. It is wonderful if we can get to know the plants and pollinators around us. Each Monday, I will post about a different plant!

How many days can you find dandelions on your walks this week? How many dandelions can you find each day?

Here are many fun ideas for learning with dandelions!

  • Can you create a dandelion flute? Can you get the tone to change?
  • Can you create dandelion art?

Here are some wonders you might explore with dandelions:

  • Can you look closely at all the parts of a dandelion?
  • How does a dandelion seed fly through the air?
  • What part of a dandelion flower becomes the seed?
  • Can you see the white fluffy part when you pull the petals from the flower?
  • What does a seed need to grow?
  • Why do you think there are so many dandelions?

Friday, May 1st!

Good Morning, Div. 4! 

It was so wonderful connecting with all of you that were able to join us on our Class Meeting! I loved hearing from you and laughing at all the silliness. We all miss each other so much! If you couldn’t make the meeting, don’t worry, we’ll have another next week. You can answer some poll questions on the general channel to share your preference for our future class meetings.

I have a special morning message from you on Teams! Today I am reading “The Girl Who Thought in Pictures” by Julia Finley Mosca and illustrated by Daniel Rieley. “Each person is special – so UNIQUE are our minds. This world needs YOUR ideas. It takes brains of ALL kinds!” Always remember to follow your passions and love who you are.

S.T.E.A.M. Fridays 

Today for your S.T.E.A.M activity you could try out designing and creating your own Dream Bedroom! You can find out details and examples on Teams in your assignments

There are some incredible and unexpected nests in the bonuses! Nature is so amazing. Once you are finished watching, you might want to see what nests you can find outside. Or even try to create one yourself! What kinds of materials can you use to make a nest? Can your nest hold an egg? Or maybe a marble?

Inquiry Project

You might want to connect your interest in animals to your country inquiry project! If you have chosen the country you want to explore, you might be ready to start exploring your wonders. Perhaps, you want to know what animals live in your inquiry country (in Assignment #3: “Nature” category).

Today is Wednesday, which means it is time for another mystery science!

This week’s mystery science we will explore how solid rock breaks apart into smaller pieces through a process called weathering (including root-wedging and ice-wedging). In the activity, Sugar Shake, you can use sugar cubes as a model for rocks. Then you are invited to perform an experiment with this model to understand the process of weathering and how this process explains why rocks at the tops of mountains are jagged, while those at the bottom are rounded.

Good morning, Div. 4! 

I hope you have had a wonderful weekend and pro d day! Here is a photo of one of my walks at the Fraser River. Can you spot the heron? Do you have any photos from your outdoor adventures?

Today we are introducing the next step of our inquiry project. Some of you might be on your Inquiry assignment #2 (choosing 2 countries to explore), or some of you might be ready for the next step! 

You had so many great ideas for this project! We categorized your questions to help you organize your research and included them in assignment #3. This week, you can choose 1-3 questions to research. They don’t have to be from the same category! 

  • You can take notes in the empty column (make sure they are in your own words). 
  • The questions are just suggestions! You might come up with your own questions for the topics! 
  • You can add photos! 
  • You can type on this document, or in powerpoint, or write on paper! 
  • You can use the “Suggested Resources” for links to helpful websites and databases! 

We also have a special math inquiry problem for you! This math problem helps explore representing big numbers! Try your best to remember the different ways to represent the numbers. If you don’t remember, how could you find out? 

Make sure you are checking in with your peers in our communication channel! Post a message and say “Hi!” to the class. If you haven’t already, you can post on the Book Club channel and share your thoughts on the first 4 chapters of “A Boy Called Bat.” I love hearing your thoughts on this book!

Good morning, Div. 4!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Today is a pro d day so your teachers will all be working and learning today. You and your families can see what would be a good fit for you today. Maybe you will continue on with projects you already started, maybe you will start something new! Please send me a message if you need anything and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

One thing to look forward to this week is our class meeting on Thursday at 11:00! Check with your families to see if you will be able to join us for this video/audio call on teams.
