June 13-24, 2022

Bonjour!

The past two weeks have been very full and busy in our class! Division 9 students have been working to finish up many projects. PLEASE NOTE: Next Wednesday, June 29th, school is only in session from 8:40-10:00am. In my June newsletter, I wrote 10:25, but this was last year’s schedule. My apologies for any confusion or scheduling challenges from this error.

In Math, we designed our own money, featuring symbols that represent our class. Division 9 dollars have been in circulation since Monday. Students are paid $2 for their class jobs, and last Friday I opened the store for them to purchase small candies, erasers or stickers with their class money. On Tuesday, they were also given a $100 bonus, and were able to buy building supplies for a plot of land in Géométrieville. With their $100, students purchased nets for cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids for the construction of houses and other buildings, and cones for “planting” trees. With this project, we practiced vocabulary for geometry, understanding of 3D objects, and fluency with coins and bills. Plus, we stretched our creative muscles!

This week, we had high school students visit to teach us how to make our own chalk using crushed eggshells. A few students opted instead to make mosaics using dyed shells. Shellevate was an exciting, if messy, success!

In Science, we have been finishing up our research project on animals, adding the final touches to our books. Our Grade 3s have worked very hard on this project and have practiced a lot of vocabulary related to biodiversity!

For French and Art, we read one of my favourite books titled Parfois je suis un renard by Danielle Daniel. Afterwards, we brainstormed adjectives to describe a large number of West Coast animals. Then we thought of a list of verbs to choose from to explain the animals’ actions. Using both, we wrote our own poems inspired by the structure of Parfois je suis un renard. Later in the week, we created fabulous self portraits following the style of illustration from the book.

We were invited to watch the Grade 1s from Mme Lam’s class perform songs that they have been practicing this term. They sang beautifully and impressed us with their handmade masks and actions!

On Thursday, we had our much-anticipated field trip to MacPherson pool with the Grade 4/5s from Mme Fox’s class. I believe everyone had a marvelous time!

Please help your child to remember a bag on Monday to bring home all of their projects and supplies from the year. Students will be given their supplies, duotangs, and art projects to take home on Monday or Tuesday, and will receive their report cards on Wednesday.

Thank you so much for all of your support! Enjoy the sunshine this weekend!

  • Luc really enjoyed this math unit. It’s such a great exercise for them, because it blends math with financial budgeting – but I don’t have to tell you that!

I love the pics! Would you happen to have the originals to email to me?

    • I am so glad Luc enjoyed this unit! It is a fun unit to blend many different parts curricular content.
I can certainly share the few photos I have. 🙂
