Hello families!

This week, students were hard at work practicing grammar, readers’ theatre, and science! They are showing so much growth, and I am impressed with their strengthening skills.

In Math, we continued work with fractions. To wrap up our unit, students imagined ingredients for their ideal pizzas, and wrote the fraction of the ingredients that each topping represented. Then, they sliced up their pizzas into equal portions and described what fraction of the whole pizza they would share.

In French, students worked in groups to prepare puppet performances of “Une graine grandit”. We are working on recording videos of their hard work. Students practiced their scripts all week, drew their puppets, and collaborated with classmates to put the plays all together!

For grammar work, we have been practicing identifying the parts of speech with increased confidence. This week, we worked on prepositions, with sentences on the board, a song to help us remember, and two “write the room” activities. Ask your child to show you the prepositions song and actions!

In Science, we checked up on our seedling experiments started last week, and were surprised to discover that the only seeds that have sprouted are those that have not had access to fresh air. We made conjectures as to why – maybe the bag held in more water, maybe the bag held in more heat, maybe the bag acted like a mini green house! We will continue monitoring our seeds and hope that those with sun, water, and air will all sprout.

For science, we also began an exciting research project on animals. Each student has been assigned a different West Coast animal to study. We first learned vocabulary for animal adaptations (or animal body parts), such as “les bois” (antlers), “une carapace” (a shell), “des serres” (talons), and more. Then, we added some of this vocabulary into our research books, and described the animals unique to each student.

In Phys. Ed. we played one of my favourite games – Predator-Prey. For this game, players are given different identities: producer (grass), herbivore (deer), carnivore (wolf) and decomposer (mushroom). Producers must escape herbivores, who must escape carnivores, and all must escape the decomposers! It is a fun variation of tag that perfectly suits our biodiversity unit.

I hope that the sunshine stays around! Have a wonderful weekend!
