Hello families of Division 9,

I hope you are taking care this week. With yesterday’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, there is much to learn and to reflect on. As a class, we have been reading stories and having discussions. We have talked about how the Canadian government took Indigenous children away from their communities to attend schools far from home. This week, we read Le chandail orange de Phyllis and Shi-shi-etko. We coloured a feather design by Gitxan artist Michelle Stoney, and on the backs, wrote reasons why every child matters. The feathers will be laminated, and along with designs from every other class at École Brantford, will be added to the fence near the primary playground as a display for the community. On Wednesday, we viewed the Orange Shirt Day assembly put together by several classes, and our work based on Tu es là pour moi was included. Ms. Aujla sent the link to the video assembly if you are interested in viewing it at home.

Which type of face mask is most effective against COVID-19? | LLUH NewsAs you may have already seen in your email, as of Monday, October 4, all student K-12 will be required to wear a mask while indoors in Burnaby schools, unless medically, developmentally, behaviourally or otherwise legitimately precluded from doing so. Brantford students are already practiced at wearing masks responsibly, but we will continue to encourage appropriate mask-wearing practices. Please ensure your child has a clean mask to wear each day, as well as an extra in their backpack in case one becomes soiled during the day.

In Math, we continued with patterning work, this week looking at patterns in a hundreds chart. Next week, we will aim to complete our short unit on patterns after learning about decreasing patterns.

Next Tuesday we will visit École Brantford’s library for the first time this year! Students will be responsible to care for the books they borrow, to return them in good condition.

Friday afternoon, we practiced our observation skills as artists and scientists, by going on a leaf hunt! We gathered colourful fall leaves and took time to notice the details and differences in each. Then, we worked on observational drawings with pencil and pencil crayon. Finally, we added watercolour paint to complete our work. I can’t wait to display these gorgeous studies! They are stunning!

Take care this weekend!
