Today, Mrs. Lee and the students at school and I learned about birch bark biting today through the videos of Denise Lajimodiere and Pat Bruderer (Math 9.5). We did not have birch bark to bite, so we tried with paper and scissors. There was A LOT of math involved in this art. See the list in the photo below for what we found and check out some of our designs! Mrs. Lee did more research, and found out that there are currently only 5 or 6 artists in the world who create birch bark biting art!!! This art form has existed for thousands and thousands of years, and used to be much more common, for materials ranging from beadwork design templates, to maps, to currency, to records of historical events!
Here is a photo update on our Earth Materials and Seeds experiment (Science 8.4 and Science 9.4). I am surprised by the results! The seeds in soil are growing best, followed by gravel (!), then layers, and lastly, sand. Although the seeds in sand grew quickly, they have since died, while the seeds in layers were the last to sprout but are growing well now.
I miss all of those I have not seen this week, and hope that you are doing well! Next week will follow the same routine as this week: assignments will be posted on Monday morning, and we will have a class meeting on Wednesday at 11:00. Thanks for being awesome, Division 2! Take care.
