Hello families!
This week in Math we practiced two strategies for multiplication of multi-digit numbers. The first is the “traditional” method, with the numbers stacked according to place value. The second is a method called the “window method” that is similar to a multiplication chart, with the numbers broken into the tens and ones values. Students worked independently, in pairs, or groups of three to make Peer Teacher videos to explain the methods. I loved watching their videos and hearing them use math vocabulary as they collaborated!
In Science, we examined the classifications and properties of levers, with a vocabulary work booklet and an active afternoon block of explorations. We rotated through different stations:
- Sort levers into their classifications
- Balance a scale
- Balance yourself or a friend on the balance boards
- Use simple materials (ruler, pencil, eraser) as levers to make heavy loads easier to lift
Students learned that we can lift objects much heavier than ourselves by adjusting the length of the effort arm on a lever. If we had a long enough lever, we could even lift the Eiffel Tower!
In Art, we have begun incorporating our knowledge of levers to make painted mobiles… pictures to come next week!
In Literacy, we continued work on our Lit Circles novels and studied the function and classifications of adjectives.
In French, we continued work on emotions vocabulary, and finished the Art pieces we began last week.
In Phys. Ed. we worked hard on more basketball skills, and spent our first official Friday for Take Me Outside time. Last week, we held a class vote on whether or not to use our Friday’s Phys. Ed. block outside, and it was a sweeping majority in favour. This week, however, we were not as prepared as we ought to have been, so it was a less-joyful experience than former times. Unless it is an indoor recess day, we will plan to be outside on Take Me Outside Fridays. As always, students are expected to dress for the weather with appropriate rain coats and footwear.
On Thursday, we had our Jump Rope for Heart kickoff assembly. Students have all received fundraising envelopes and information. Please see the website if you wish to donate online: https://secure-support.heartandstroke.ca/site/SPageServer/?pagename=jump_home&s_locale=en_CA
I hope you all have a great weekend! See you again on Monday, Division 2! 🙂
Working with lever , seems like kids had lot of fun doing it
