The final week of November flew by! We are coming to the end of Term 1, and are working on finishing up many of the projects we have started.
In French, we began a new unit on family vocabulary, practicing using inferencing skills and searching for vocabulary words to help us understand family relationships of a fictional French family called la famille Soleil. This was a challenge for the class, but it is exciting to see them piece together the French vocabulary they have learned so far this year!
In Math, we continued practicing our understanding of place value, including addition and subtraction numbers in the ten thousands and representing numbers up to the millions in multiple ways.
In Writer’s Workshop, we are adding the final details to our stories, working on building up editing skills and enhancing descriptive sentences, and adding dynamic dialogue.
In Science, we busily build “robot hands” to represent the relationship between muscles and bones in the human body. We learned that muscles are attached to bones by tendons, and that when muscles flex, they pull the bones with them so they bend at the joints. While our robot hands do not have proper joints, and the “muscles” (yarn) run through the “bones” (paper straws) instead of over them, I hope they helped the class to understand this relationship! We had an amazing session of Restorative Justice on Wednesday, learning about harm, and how we can sometimes hurt or be hurt by people we care about. I am impressed with this group, and how they are building greater and greater trust with one another. Thanks, Division 2, for your hard work.
Although we are wrapping up most projects, today we started a new one. This afternoon, we began a new ADST project that will take us to the end of the calendar year. Since we have been designing creatures in Science class, we are now practicing applied design skills, through the technology of sewing. The class energetically designed updated versions of their creatures, or entirely new ones, assembled a pattern, and some have begun sewing felt pieces into dolls! I think this will be a fun project to take home at the end of December.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend! See you on Monday, Division 2!
Wow seems like this week was really interesting. Learning about bones compared with robot was great idea. Thank you for sharing Ms.Anderson. Have a happy weekend
Thank you! I hope the students found it interesting too! 🙂
