November 4-8

Hello families!

This week we  continued work on our lived-experience stories, and learned about the value of using descriptive language to create imagery.  We practiced by describing a plain old soda cracker with as many adjectives and comparisons (similes and metaphors) as we could. The list that we created together was so impressive that I wrote a short excerpt to demonstrate how even plain things can become interesting with the right attention to detail.

We learned about the roles belonging to different governments in Canada: federal, municipal, and provincial, and tested our new knowledge with a short game.  Try it at home, if you wish: https://www.ola.org/en/visit-learn/school-programs/games-quizzes/levels-government-game

In Science, we turned our attention to the human skeleton, with a small-group read-aloud text and a skeleton assembly puzzle.  Next week, we will learn some Latin in learning the names of the bones!

In French, we practiced more clothing and colour vocabulary – we’re growing in confidence speaking French!

In the computer lab, we began coding using a program called Tynker.  It is set up as a series of game-like lessons to teach the beginnings of coding logic.  I apologize for any confusion there might have been in logging into student Blogfolios.  Parent logins and passwords have been sent home in student planners.  Please change your passwords after logging in.

On Friday, we had our Remembrance Day assembly, and Divisions 1, 2 and 3 beautifully sang (or signed) the song “Strangest Dream.”  Our afternoon Art work period lead to some amazing finished pieces.  Many students finished their gorgeous self portraits inspired by Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald.  Others completed stunning landscapes inspired by the increasingly early sunsets, and the brilliant complementary colours they create!  Aren’t these pieces beautiful?!

We do not have school this Monday, November 11 for Remembrance Day.

Next Thursday and Friday we will have a special guest to do woodworking with whole school.  A volunteer letter has been sent home with one student per family.  Please let the school know if you are able to assist with any of the sessions.  Thank you!

I hope you enjoy your weekend.  See you on Tuesday!
